Using Analogue lenses with digital camera

    Hi

New to all this and working with tight budget.

    Got myself an Olympus E410

Have been told that some old Olympus analogue lens systems will fit the 410

anyone know how I can easily identify which?

    Cheers

You'll need an adapter (from ebay usually) to convert the 4/3rds mount to suit the older lenses that you want to use.  This doesn't have to be other Olympus lenses either, there are convertors for Minolta, T mounts, even Canikon I think.

From here I think it might be a case of trial and error.  Some lenses will work better than others, but from what I gather most of the good primes work well with the 4/3rds sensor.  The image quality will not be as good as with a dedicated 4/3rds lens though, as the 4/3rds lenses are designed for the light to hit the sensor straight on.  The older lenses will cause the light to fall on the sensor at a slight angle.  Still, I haven't tried but know that there are some very good/acceptable results out there.

But, of course, your old, adapted lenses will be manual focus, manual stop-down lenses unless Olympus, has been able to pull off some new kind of wizardry. Invest at least in one of the kit zooms or a prime lens in the new mount.

Actually, the lenses are all analogue, it's just that some of them have been redesigned to work better on digital cameras.

    Thanks for the advice guys.

Something rather nice about having to set all the settings manually.

Thing is, I was told that there was a range of OLYMPUS analogue lenses that still fit with no adapter.

Anyone shed any light on that before I go and buy the wrong one off ebay?

    Cheers

There are no other lenses that will fit the 4/3rds mount other than 4/3rds lenses, unless you use an adapter.  I am 100% certain about this.  The 4/3rds system was designed from the ground up and so no longer used any existing mount, Olympus or other.  This was seen as alienating many Olympus followers  who had a lot of expensive kit from years gone by, but that was the decision that Olympus took.  I guess it goes to show how strong their belief is in the 4/3rds system.

Any old Olympus (not 4/3rds mount) lenses on Ebay that suggest they can be used with the 4/3rds system should (but don't always) say "with the appropriate adapter".
