    What Standard lens?

    Hey everyone,

I have another question about buying products so I hope some people can help out.

Currently I only have a standard canon efs 18-55mm lens to use for just normal shooting/portraits/scenery etc however the quality is kinda poor as it is the basic lens that came with the camera. I'm looking to upgrade to a good quality lens, perfect for scenery/portraits/weddings/life; so what would you recommend?

I've had a look around and was thinking about the Canon EFS 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM; is this a good lens or right for what I need it for? I assume it’s compatible for the 350D and 40D?

Thanks for any help provided :)

    Matt.

    the 50mm f1.8.

Even though i have a 24-105mm f4 L lens (which most would consider adequate for your needs) i still have a 50mm stuck on the front for a lot of the time and for its price i don't think you can improve upon it. Picture quality is excellent and the ability to control all aspects of your picture is up there with the best.

    Hi

Just bought a Sigma 24-70 f2.8, seems a lot better than the 17-55 so far, read the reveiws. I kept the 17-55 as its the widest lens i have & is pretty worthless 2nd hand. I also keep a Canon 50mm f1.8 prime & it proved invaluable on a recent trip to an aquarium where flash was not allowed.

The Sigma 18-50 f2.8 is a great lens - very good quality images, in particular. It doesn't give you quite the range of the Canon but the faster aperture and macro focus ability are very useful.

    I agree with Eileen...

The 18-50mm f2.8 Sigma is a fantastic little lens. There are two versions available - one with macro and one without so make sure which one you're getting (especially if you're looking at secondhand). The only difference is the size of the front end. The non-macro version is 67mm and the other takes a 72mm filter.

I have the non-macro version and it's great. I consider it to be the perfect 'kit lens' on for my 40D and apart from my Sigma 10-20, it's my most used lens.
