G'day everyone,

I'm sure people have posted stuff like this plenty of times but I haven't been keeping up on what's good to get etc. So I thought I might ask....

I'm planning to buy another camera as I've been hired to do a couple weddings/portraits in the future, so I thought it might be best to have two cameras (1 for backup etc) but I'm not sure what's best to get. I'm not really a beginner anymore but not really pro so I'm not sure what's best.

I already have a Canon 350D and was possibily looking at the 450D to buy, would people agree this is a good idea? Also does anyone know if the 450D can take the same lenses that a 350D takes?

I'll answer what I am sure about that your lenses will work fine on the 450. The only compatibility issues you might have is the memory card. As far as I know, the 350 uses a compact flash card whilst the 450 uses the SD card.

If you want a step up then I suppose the 40D is a top end consumer type with the 450D being an entry level type. Obviously the 40D will be more expensive but you can use your old lenses and the compact flash card.

Actually I just spoke to the IT guy here at work and he recommended the 40D as an upgrade and I've looked into it and i think I'd probably agree. However you have helped me by stating that the 40D will take the same lenses and flash cards! That's good news and a great help! Price isn't a concern; I just want to make sure I'm getting the right camera!

I've had the 40D for nearly 9 months. The current price, with cashback, makes it amazing value. Can't think of any reason to buy a 450D over a 40D unless you really must have a small lightweight camera.

I echo Sue's comments, I've had my 40D for almost 7 months & it's a delight to use.....intuitive, fast (focus & shooting rate of 6fps vs 3. something), magnesium alloy frame (vs plastic)......a different class to the 350/400/450 series

Just a thought... you're getting the right camera for who? Yourself, or the "i.t." guy?

Was I bit harsh, well here's my input, the 350D will take the same shots as the 450, 40D's.  However, lenses make a hell of a difference, for me this is where the money should be spent, Fast lenses and wide angle would be a great benefit for weddings, also a very good flash gun will be needed with a sturdy Tripod.  Hope this helps.

Hi, a quick note , i agree it is a good idea to get good lenses, however if you are going to shoot weddings then having two camera bodies is essential . Spending a lot of money though on a high end camera body then putting cheap lenses on it though kind of defeates the purpose, so whatever you buy make sure you have some good glass,  mel.

Thanks for that - that's exactly what i meant. I know about cameras and prices, but i don't want to make a mistake or purchase a camera when another camera might be better for nearly the same price etc.
Its a big choice to make so i just want compare notes and ideas to get a general idea or what kind of camera/lenses i should be looking into.
