Nicely done. I'll contribute one of my HDR shots of a different nature ... and temperature:

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.

    Here's a question:

If I wanted to include a person in a HDR image, whilst creating multiple exposures, would you take the person in the "normal" exposure and then move them out of the scene? I'm thinking that to get someone to stay still for 5 or 7 exposures (some of which will be long) isn't possible.  But I'm alsoo thinking that the other exposures will overlay the person.  So perhaps it might be best including the person in the last exposure?  I haven't tried HDR yet and don't have any software, so can't have a play.  I'm thinking out-loud at the moment, there are a few other possibilities, such as carting a load of studio lighting over the fence!

    Cheers

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.

Martin - why don't you download the 30 day trial of Photomatix then you would be able to have a play with it. The trial version stamps their company logo over the image but if you're only going to have a play with it then this really doesn't matter.

Also I posted this a while back (now copied and pasted here) concerning a M§ plug-in. Never tried it myself but if you've got CS2/3 might be worth exploring.

not sure if anyone's aware of this, i just came across it last night in the current edition of Photoshop Creative magazine, but there is an HD Photo plug-in for CS2/3 (Windows and Mac). this plug-in will allow one to open and save HD Photo files in Photoshop. the plug-in supports a wide range of pixel formats and will automatically select the image mode that is best for your image.

    plug-in available from here:

oh that winter sunset is rather nice :D

Martin - you need to have a play I think. Most folk nowadays use photomatix as a base. I do lazy hdrs - I auto bracket 2 stops or less apart take the 3 shots and there's my HDR. I will then go into cs2 and further process.

What folk are doing now is then overlaying the hdr with the original image and/or using layers to select maybe one element like moving water they dont want as hdr so thats how you could do a person.

You need to have a play if only to see what we are talking about :D

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.

Cheers folks, I'll download a trail version in a while and give it a try.  I'll get a couple more images first so that I can make the most of the 30 days.  As it's not something I want to use very often I won't be buying the software (flash guns and studio lights are way up the priority list), but at least I'll know what is possible and get an idea of how it works.  Then I can "sub it out" to someone Stick out tongue [:P]

    Thanks Digicat Smile [:)]

I have been using the Photomatix software for three weeks or so and comparing its HDRs with the HDRs I make with PSE5. The PSE5 HDRs take a little more time but my results seem invariably better than the results I get with Photomatix ... maybe I just haven't got the hang of it yet ...

I sometimes think it's what you are used to but you have to be very subtle with photomatix and be prepared to adjust colours.

You are getting great results and thats what counts! :D

Thought I'd add a shot to keep the hdr thread going - tried using a few suggested adjustments from Matt's and co's magazine feature

    Haloing in Photomatix

I have had a registered version of Photomatix for a couple of days so far, and have been very impressed with the results.

However, there is occasionally haloing around parts of the finished image, often on the land / sky boundary.  Is there a way of minimising this within the programme, or is elimination down to significant post-processing?

At work atm, so don't have time to go through the entire thread, so forgive me if this has already been discussed!!!  Smile [:)]

    Thanks,

    Bernie

    Re: Haloing in Photomatix

    Hi Bernie,

Welcome to the forum... If you mess about with the LIGHT SMOOTHING and LUMINOSITY sliders, you'll be able to reduce or remove the halo effect. It's actually one of my pet-hates with HDR.

Here's a recent one of mine to add to the thread...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, that David Constable's a bad influence. Fortunately he doesn't come round here any more so he can't see that I nicked his idea.....

    Re: Haloing in Photomatix

Thanks for the welcome - some good stuff going on here!  Big Smile [:D]

Here's an example of the halo problem that I'm having with Photomatix:

    http://community.dcmag.co.uk/photos/berniess_gallery/images/761620/original.aspx

it's very clear on the skyline, and particularly on the rock outcrop on the left.

Will have a play with the sliders as you suggest, and see how I get on.

ps - how do I incorporate images into my post - the content box keeps hanging on me!!!  Embarrassed [:$]

    Re: Haloing in Photomatix

Yeah like Spirit said....luminosity is the key here. It's areas of sharp transition. Light smoothing can do it too but that makes a big change to the image.

Re: The HDR Tips and Tricks Thread.

Im new to HDR but already learned a lot just by reading a few posts here, I never though of adding elements of the original photo back in the HDR imageEmbarrassed [:$] Here is one I just tried from a single RAW file with multiple exposure settings, and replaced the water from the original as it had become a little blown in the processing.
