Cannoman? If it was your not alone. (I think I even made a not so subtle hint in a thread a while back)

But I think we're past the point of pointing the finger at dave Wink [;)]

Yes, he seemed to have the same points of view. Big Smile [:D]

They seek him here, they seek him there.

They seek him every freakin` where

He was on this forum, known as Stan

After my resurrection I entered a reply to a post, then up pops that Welsh car park attendant with his usual sarcasm. He did not know me from Adam  but he could not resist.  As for Old Boy he must live on this forum, always has an answer for everything. But not everything correct.

Stan, you were banned for a reason; ban dodging is not allowed on this forum. However, as it's a nice sunny day, we'll give you one chance. Keep your comments photography related and refrain from antagonism, and we'll all get along swell.

Maybe the problem is that we're becoming too American - big gas guzzling 4x4s, cosmetic surgery, fast food, overweight etc. Some US friends of ours at nearby Fairford airbase told us they were astounded how American we're becoming. And that's in the heart of the Cotswolds!

Maybe that's why we're becoming more violent? Sorry, Swede, I really don't want to offend you, but there is a lot of violent crime there.

In the US, the cops carry guns and will hold you at gunpoint while you get your drivers licence from the glove compartment. Maybe our police need to be more aggressive with the new breed of United States of Great Britain thugs

Maybe we should become more American - having lived here (in California) for the last 2 years I'm astounded at the respect shown by younger people to both their elders and property - How many car dealerships, in the UK, can leave their cars on the forecourt overnight, every night, without fear of vandalism?  Not many I can bet: here, they are always out and they are always pristine - and that has nothing to do with gun-toting cops!

I think that it would be better to look at the failings within the UK itself before pointing fingers elsewhere.  Here, where I live in California, there is a huge investment in youth - playparks, for the younger kids, that are well maintained and remain vandalism free.  The older kids and teenagers have skateparks, horseshoe pits (simple game with horseshoes and a spike) and countless other things they can do - and more to the point they do them!  Show kids in the UK some respect, invest some time in them and who knows they might even respond in kind!

So now I've defended a country I once thought was even worse than the UK - I will go back to enjoying the sunshine and the relaxed pace of life that is the result, with my cheap petrol, cheap groceries and lovely cheap local wine - when I recall the cost of living in the UK I wonder whether it is the British government, perhaps, that needs an ASBO!

    Viva California! :-)

Yes, there is a lot of violence over here. I confess, however, that I have not especially noted its absence in other lands, including some countries with a 'sterling' reputation. You are still ahead of us in the race toward Orwell's 1984, although we are catching up fast with our 'anti-terrorist' laws.

I think trinny2812 seems to have got the handle on California dreamin'.

It's probably because as a nation we've lost our own identity through mass immigration, political correctness, tokenism, religious extremism, lack of government support for the ordinary man in the street, tolerance of sexual deviants etc, that people then feel compelled to take an identity off the peg-what's portrayed on television more than anything?-The American way of life! people who feel alienated or lost will subconciously look to and imitate a strong image to give themselves a sense of personal security,in my opinion, for what little it counts as a white, working class, law abiding relatively normal person.Angry [:@]

Re: ...this is what's wrong with this coutry.......

Swede wrote that we are closer to an Orwellian state on 19th May.....on that very same day I posted this in the Help with grammar thread

the other day on the news was a report that they had put a camera in a tree on Hampstead Heath to "catch people who were indulging in anti-social behaviour".

Now in the Orwellian epic that is 1984, there are a number of similarities with todays society

1984 Eurasia, East Asia, Oceania 2008 The East, The West, The 3rd World (aka the developing world)

1984 Teleview (from memory long time since I read it now) 2008 Webcams

1984 The Ministry of Truth responsible for propaganda 2008 Spin Doctors and all Govt' Depts in general of course (before they send the Thought Police for me)

1984 Newswrite/Newspeak 2008 Txt spk (this is where we stay on topic English is an evolving language)

Now also in 1984 Winston and Julia went off in to the woods to "do the deed" and their conversation was picked up by microphones hidden in the trees....so how close are we to the Orwellian vision of the future or are we still a free society......Which is why I mentioned the camera on Hampstead Heath which is actually overlooking a pavement and main road I hasten to add, not the more errr "notorious" parts of the heath.

Remember BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU (well DCMAG are anyway Stick out tongue <img src=" src="/emoticons/emotion-4.gif">)

better go think the thought police are coming down the road........

My wife and have been discussing the state of this country and where we feel it is going wrong, and both of us have said if we had the skill sets required and didn't have such bad credit history we would emigrate, probably to Canada or possibly New Zealand or at a push the US....but alas we are not in a position to "upsticks and leave" unfortunately.....but the way we have moved to being a society under surveillance and slowly but surely having to answer for our actions however innocent we are (and yes I appreciate the terrorism argument but it is overplayed in my opinion) is downright scary and nobody seems to bat an eyelid....And we are very quick to condemn Robert Mugabe (err didn't we help put him in power) and the fact that he is an unelected leader of his country....I don't remember voting for GB to be prime minister, shouldn't we be having a General Election so the voters can DEMOCRATICALLY ELECT the leader...Any chance of the opposition putting a proposal forward for a Vote of No Confidence in the current leadership and forcing a G.E. especially given the Tax disaster and that fact that next year the country is going to be in hock to the tune of about 43 BILLION pounds....rant over I'm off for some more caffeine so I can get really wired Wink [;)]

"it is not a fair way to treat young people."

They say its against their human rights! What about the human right of the Garry Newloves of the world? His family? No wonder we have anti- social behaviour, murders and stabbings on the streets when your not allowed to 'punish' or in fact do anything to youth causing anti social behaviour. Oh sorry - you can. You give them a badge saying 'ASBO' on it, you know, like a Blue Peter badge.......

The use of these devices should be spread far and wide. Why not stick them of fire engines - may help stop kids lobbing bottles, stones and fireworks are the crews. Either that or turn the hose on them.....

It seems that everyone just wants a quick fix to the problem. In order to put society right, we need to formulate a strategy that is well thought out, working together.

    I suggest:

    • national service
    • corporal punishment
    • tagging - especially old people if they get grumpy (or just take their teeth away!)
    • hanging
    • the birch
    • a good clip round the ear
    • banning anything American
    • invading France (again    Smile [:)])
    • getting Nikon to sell me a camera that bloody works (it looks like the fourth one in a month is going to have to go back    Angry [:@])
