Re: The grumpy old gits thread......

I must say that this thread has some great entertainment value...I've been laughing all morning.

ADD and ADHD...I say, WHAT A CROCK!!!! I am a teacher and a mother and these kids with so called ADD and ADHD just need to be fed the correct food. If they weren't being pumped full of sugar, additives and preservatives they would not be a problem...check their lunch boxes what do you see? soft drink, chips, lollies, chocolate and greasy junk! Replace it with water or fruit juice, sandwiches, fruit and yoghurt and you have a fairly normal kid. and I should know too, my daughter can be a right handful, with the so called symptoms of ADD if she eats junk, but feed her the right stuff and she is good as gold!

Corporal punishment in schools...well, I think that some of the naughty kids today, you know the ones, not the ones who need expulsion, but the ones that just push the limits all the time...I reckon one swift one on the bum with a cane would sort them out pronto...thats just my opinion, as a teacher I reckon it would so work!

My maths teacher once said that the good students would fear the cane and would be good anyway, the bad eggs will just get use to it and keep doing it...

I assume your teacher hasn't had six of the best on both hands or the slipper on his bum, else he wouldn't suggest that. Crying [:'(]

I think the cane is a bit archaic in these modern times... A Taser would be far more effective! Big Smile [:D]

hmmm a Taser would be handy in the classroom, especially asa relief teacher in a classroom full of 'know it all' year 10 kids who are only there because they have to be and they're gunning for you.

And Craig, there are those inbetween kids, between the good and the bad, the ones who are just trying to push the limits a little and driving the teachers crazy because they have to deal with the real rubbish and then these otherwise good kids who are pushing boundaries...I say that it would work for the inbetweeners. That way you could see who the real bad ones were and the inbetweeners who would normally be tagging along with them would be too scared to. There only needs to be one really rotten egg in a class to bring out the naughtiness of the inbetweeners. A swift one to the inbetweeners and then only one is a problem...does that make sense...sure...clear as mud! Hmm [^o)]

What I've always longd for when my dogs were being pests was a remote control with a pause button - you point it at them and they freeze for a while! Looking at it from the outside it seems to simply be a case of the boundaries having been pushed too far. Difficult to get back to better discipline now because there's little in the way of censure and no-one needs to be ashamed of anything. The good kids suffer, the ones who don't give a toss can get away with murder and the ones who might go either way see the bad kids getting away with it and think 'why not?'. Teachers have my sympathies! Why did they make schools so huge?

Jeez, what a bunch of grumpy old farts.

Well, I guess I belong here too--recently I was described as a "superannuated academic" -though I'm sorry to say that the thread was deleted by a moderator.

I guess I'm like the old professor in Wild Strawberries (if you have to ask you probably don't belong here).

    Nobody's mentioned National Service.

    Why not?

Because no matter how good it could be for the Country it would be political suicide for the party that brought it back.
It should never have been stopped in the first place - It always did more good than harm and it put a layer of discipline into society that is no longer there....

What a brilliant idea! I howled laughing at this line in the story about the different designs... "put the 'cute' back in 'electrocute'". Big Smile [:D]

I've even figured out who deserves the first testing of the mp3 Taser and I'd like to zap him to the tune of 'halelujah'... What the Hell is wrong with the Archbishop of Canterbury? Has he completely lost the plot? As much as I detest the psychological crutch that is organised religion, this is supposed to be a 'Christian' country and he's in charge of the chuch and he thinks some parts of muslim law will inevitably be incorporated into British law!

    Over my dead body...

Someone should arrest him for treason!

The biggest problem with national service is that it ties the hands of politicians to put the troops in harms way. A volunteer army can be sent out without due consideration (see Iraq), whereas if it's an army of conscripts who haven't volunteered and are being forced to die for their country, then it's more difficult to make the case unless the country is under direct threat (such as WWII).

This is the principle problem the Dutch have with sending troops abroad.

The other problem with Nat. Service is the term is usually too short to get any use out of the conscripts. The term is usually 1 year (or less in some countries), most of which is spent in training. Just when their beginning to be of some use to the army, their term is finished and they're released. Making conscription terms longer would probably be political suicide.

Now community service...that might just get around the above issues. Although you'd still have a group of people forced to work, which implies poor motivation to do a good job. That was the point of the boot camps for the military: to break the rebellious spirit and teach how to take orders.
