I'll have you know I employ the old English custom of "Quaffing" my beer, with a great smacking of lips and a at the barmaid. I then wipe off the froth from my top lip with the back of my hand, and brush any spillage off my cardy. This is usually followed by a restrained belch.
None of your Germanic nonsense of clanging steins and eins, zwei suppe!

Well it's official then - Britain is the 16th happiest country in the whole wide world believe it or not. Denmark beat us into first place whilst Zimbabwe came last in a lowly 97th place. That should give the members of the old codgers club - oops sorry, the 'Grumpy Club' something to chew the fat over when they meet up at the Bishop Blaize pub next Tuesday evening. Apparently, only four countries - Austria, Belgium, UK and Germany show a downward trend!! Could it be something they put in the beer? Wouldn't you just love to be a fly on the wall? http://edition.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/07/02/nations.happiness/index.html
Can you actually believe that they keep 'Happiness Trends' records? Whatever next!! http://www.worldvaluessurvey.org/happinesstrends/
Cough cough - Alan, you've got froth on your lip.

Britain may only occupy 16th place, but the British are top of the league, especially in the stiff upper lip category. This survey was carried out amongst the remaing few natives that still inhabit our shores.
That's not froth, Wednesday is one of my designated non-shaving days.![Stick out tongue [:P]](/emoticons/emotion-4.gif)

So life now imitates the sporting world, where our league position is falling due to overseas participants... Anyway, what's all this tosh about the "United Kingdom" and "Britain"? Such surveys should reflect nations and nationality - oh I forgot, the PC brigade (and led the the US of A) deems that Britain is a nation and British is a nationality ![Angry [:@]](/emoticons/emotion-12.gif)

sue allen:Sometimes you're glad you're not young any more - just watched some of the set by Jay Z, or whatever he's called, at Glastonbury. It was apparently a triumph. He seemed to speak some unintelligible words in that way that sounds exactly the same whoever you're listening to...shout a bit at the audience and get them to wave etc.....while music of a sort carried on in the background. It all seemed so unexciting and sort of nothing. Ho hum ...remember when your parents said that about the Stones.... ![Geeked [8-|]](/emoticons/emotion-15.gif)
Not a fan of his music but his little dig at Gallager made me chuckle.
Also - The Kings of Leon were superb. I had not heard much of their stuff before. Impressed indeed.

Re: The reactionary old windbags thread......
Oh today I'm feeling really grumpy - unbelievably grumpy in fact. Why? Well this morning I received a nice friendly email from DCM advising me that as a result of complaints received from unnamed persons(s) that a post that I recently made had been deleted, that I should reacquaint myself with the rules particularly as applies to racism and issuing a warning with respect to suspension.
Although the post itself has been deleted, it has been quoted in subsequent posts and therefore available as a reminder to what I am now referring to (back one page). If that person, or persons, and I have good suspicion of who it is, actually took a few moments to read what was actually put and meant, unlike the obvious way they did with narrow mindedness and blinkered vision, then they would have seen it for what it was. For goodness sake, has it now gone so far that unless one actually includes the words 'lens' or 'camera' it is seen as racist? Whilst I won't repeat the word I used again for fear of upsetting the PC brigade, it is worth pointing out that my dictionary definition of the word is 'born in a specified place' and it doesn't matter a hoot what PC is applied, this is a fact and is not in any way prejudice, racist or any other slant those who took offense would care to place on it. In addition, if this person(s) had ever been to the country mentioned, as I have several times, then they would have realised that it is the custom to dress up in the national/local costume during special occasions which includes the art of face painting. The event in question that I alluded to, I would have assumed to have been very worthy of it. Hopefully the person(s) in question will be just as quick to offer me an apology when they tune their TV's in to the opening ceremony in 2010 as they obviously are to press the complain button.
I am not a racist and have never been one in my entire life. Whilst it is not my intention to elaborate further regarding my own personal background it suffices to say that I was subjected to many many years of prejudice and racism during my childhood years and know exactly how painful it can be. At the same time I would beggar to suggest that those of the PC brigade who are forever blowing their trumpet really take a deep look inside themselves. They might just find, as has been said many many times before, that it is because of their own self posturing that many problems are created. Please stop seeing things that just don't exist.

That's a bit sad Alan. You can't express a opinion without some troll objecting, but rather than post their reply prefer to use underhand methods. I have never seen any post by you that would offend anyone.

Re: The reactionary old windbags thread......
Thanks for your support OB - very much appreciated believe you me. It both saddens and sickens me that there are some that only see black and white without shades of grey in between. How this translates to their photography is anyone's guess. ![Confused [8-)]](/emoticons/emotion-43.gif)
May I also extend the same thank you to those, who, for personal reasons thought better than to leave comment here but have nevertheless offered their support by other contact methods. These messages help to reassure that I'm not the last remaining sane person on the planet. ![Big Smile [:D]](/emoticons/emotion-2.gif)

Re: The reactionary old windbags thread......
Sorry to read that Alan. It's almost becoming like the days of the Stasi.
What person has not got the balls to say what is felt about remarks that for some reason gives offence. What a pitiful situation we're in.

Re: The reactionary old windbags thread......
Sorry to hear this Alan. I read this thread all the time along with some others, at no time have I ever seen you write anything racist or insulting, you are very helpful, posting links for people which may help. Most of the time along with Abers you have me laughing with your conversasions. I agree with you that people should take a long hard look at themselves before they bleat, are they so naive as to think that people do not have an opinion about things happening in the world. I think people in this forum have now become afraid to say what they really think in case someone may press the big red button.
I once got email to say one of my posts had been deleted from the forum for "slagging someone off" when in fact I had been on the receiving end for months and nothing was done about that.
I'm sure you have more support than you think, just wish they could post it,must be a sign of the times ![Sad [:(]](/emoticons/emotion-6.gif)

Re: The reactionary old windbags thread......
Thanks Janet, as with the others very much appreciated. Yes it is a sign of the times I'm afraid to say. There was a time when both sides of the story were presented and heard before judgement was cast but that obviously counts for nothing nowadays. Oh well, life goes on.
