Re: What annoyed you today?
Going through past papers for my stats 2 exam, and then getting asked to perform a chai squared goodness of fit test on some data to find out whether it was the appropriate distribution. I dont even know what a goodness of fit test is!
I eventually worked out it was an out of date exam paper though, I'm guessing I'll probably cover that next year. For the moment I can concentrate on how simple the other stuff in stats 2 is, The only hard bit is writing the sums to get the mean and standard deviation of a discreet distribution. It's not hard, it just takes up a good chunk of the page, especially if you use a specific one!
Anyhow, I'm gonna stop talking to myself and get some sleep ![Big Smile [:D]](/emoticons/emotion-2.gif)

don't know why i just don't get on with stats
but i have physics to revise for (Moments, Momentum and kinetic crud. and then Current Electricity and elastic properties or something)
then C1 and C2 maths which im most likely gunna fail too!
Good luck to you.

The "goodness of fit" tests are very useful for determining just how well your fit really models the data. For example, on these pages for fits to solar proton event spectra, we can model the spectra (number of particles at a specific energy) with either:
- an exponential in energy, exp(E/E0),
- power law, E^B
- exponential in rigidigity (like energy only different)
We then use the Chi2 test to determine which of these three fits best fit the data. In the case highlighted above, it's the rigidity fit, which if you then look at the spectral plot does fit the data points the best. However, making a decision based on "eyeballing" the plot is a more subjective method - in the case above, it's obvious which fit is better, but in other distributions, it's not so much the case. H.

Re: What annoyed you today?
What annoyed me today - Going to the job centre What a depressing place that is. And they don't have any jobs on the wall anymore, you have to use the computer which I can just as easily do at home.
I heard over 10 names called in the short time that I was there but no one actually turned up for their signing on. If you're going to sign on the least you could do is turn up for 10mins every two weeks to collect your payment!
And when I was presented with a list of jobs most of them I had already called about to be told that they are taken already (or were never available in reality). Explaining this to the staff I was told that this was normal and it seems that people just like collecting CV's. Grr.
I suppose the good thing is I have plenty of time on my hands to concentrate on "branding" for my future career as a photographer ![Hmm [^o)]](/emoticons/emotion-40.gif)

Re: What annoyed you today?
Martin, try signing on to the REED website, upload your CV and hey presto, it was exactly what I did in January knowing I was being made redundant in Feb, I had 3 interviews plus loads of agency interviews and got a full time job which started the week after I left my last job (basically had a week off) and I'm still there now..And you don't just get calls from REED I had about 7 agencies contact me to go and register with them etc......forget the JC, you can still provide jobsearch proof (if you need to) by applying for jobs on the reed website as that then generates a confirmation e-mail to your inbox which proves you have sent applications off.....and good luck with the jobhunting and with the photography branding

Re: What annoyed you today?
A friend of mine signs on - he has a disability and is really struggling to get a job although trying really hard - the other week someone acused him of not turning up, even though another member of staff confirmed he was there. It was the person he went to see who hadn't turned up and they stopped his benefit. Fortunately it's sorted now but he was without money for 4 weeks ... how do they expect people to survive? It's not a good system.

Why wait for the future to start your photographic career, why not now? As you say you have plenty of time on your hands, don't waste it "branding", whatever that means, a brand is worth nothing without a reputation, surely that comes first? Use that time to further your reputation. Good luck.

Re: What annoyed you today?
Cheers all, I feel better now.
Keith, thanks for the REED recommendation. I have just signed up and already applied for 2 local jobs that I haven't seen advertised anywhere else, below my qualifications and pay scale but I can't afford to care about that right now. It's a good site. Cheers, and well done on finsing something so quickly yourself.
Shadow_Wolf, It will surprise you to hear that I didn't even have to hand in a CV at the JC. It's not their job to submit CV's to employers on our behalf, or help us find a job at all really. It is their job to make you fill out the same form on-line, on the phone, and then again at the job centre and also to try and sell you other "benefits" that you might not have considered. Gee, thanks.
Moon, I understand what you are saying. It seems the harder you try the less you get with these systems.
Thanks Alan. I guess by "branding" I meant getting my reputation built up - by getting my work seen - and deciding just how I'm going to make money from it as I'm not sure how I'm going to go about that at the moment. I have a lot of ideas and guess I should give them all a go to see what profits.
The website on it's own doesn't do anything and I am putting a portfolio together so I can approach potential buyers and editors. And I have some articles drafted with pictures that I want to submit (I know grammar and spelling are a problem but Stephanie can proof read for me!) to magazines in the hope of future commissions. I've also considered event type photography to help bring the money in. I'm on the look-out for marathons and such events in the Durham area so I can put a portfolio together for this also.
I'm going to start working my way through my list of ideas, getting my work sent off and promoting my website some more.
Cheers!

Re: What annoyed you today?
Glad to have been of help Martin and good luck, another site worth considering is www.workthing.co.uk again you put in your requirements and they send you job alerts and they have a helpline no. and everything, granted I haven't had anything REALLY suitable (mainly a lack of qualifications on my part not because of a problem with the site) from them but I still get job alerts but the perfect job still eludes me, it starts at 1 finishes at 2 and you get an hour for lunch and take home a premiership footballers wage ![Big Smile [:D]](/emoticons/emotion-2.gif) but I shall keep looking...in all seriousness it's a good site and again you can upload your CV set your search parameters etc....Let us know how it goes though

Re: What annoyed you today?
Mike Dinsdale:In other words, fiddle the stats to best suit your own expected outcome!
Haha, so that's how the government do it then!
Or Ofcom. On the news this morning: The regulator's regional communications market report shows that 59% of
rural households have broadband compared to 57% of urban homes.
So, 59% of rural households have broadband. How have they defined "broadband"? Greater than 1 Mb/s, 2 Mb/s, 8 Mb/s? I think you'll find these figures change dramatically as you select the sample of homes surveyed by the connection speed. Sure, you can get ADSL on Orkney, but it's probably only 256kbs, but it's still "broadband".
A more reasonable statistical analysis would break this down in terms of connection speed and reliability. Sigh...dumbing down statistics for the masses just so the gov't department looks good. If the BBC had reported this correctly, then they'd have asked these questions. ![Huh? [:^)]](/emoticons/emotion-18.gif) H.

Re: What annoyed you today?
I think your basic definition of broadband is its ability to have more than one device present on the line at any time,i.e simultaneous use of internet and phone-as for the connection speeds,as you correctly say ,these can vary dramatically from area to area, and provider to provider.Regarding the BBC, we all know the only thing they are good for is spending the licencepayers money on token, politically correct agenda base biased reporting and anything that has nothing to do with entertaining the public, such as comprehensive, realistically bidded sports coverage.Since the liberals and other assorted saddos have taken over, they've been a pile of poo-a bit like Britain in general,I feel.

I have to disagree with you on some aspects of the BBC - they do produce some top quality work outside of light entertainment, e.g. Coast, and other natural history programmes that I've found fascinating and without equal. And Panorama (when it doesn't have a political agenda) can be quite informative and entertainingly educational. As for sports, well, that should be on it's own separate channel - it's tedious if you're not emotionally attached to the game, and much better if seen in person. When it runs into extra time, which it invariably does, it impacts the rest of the schedule. In the days of digital TV, it shouldn't be too difficult to create a BBC Sports channel for Match of the Day, Snooker, Wimbledon, and the Olympics. Another channel they should create is the "God these programmes are awful", which could contain all of the reality shows, competitions (come dancing, dancing on ice, celebrities do ballroom dancing, Xfactor, big brother, ALWebber needs another singer, and of course Eurovulsion song contest). Sorry, I find all of these shows phenomenally stupid, uninteresting and unimaginative. H.

Re: What annoyed you today?
What annoyed me today? Well this has been annoying me for a couple of months now….
At the entrance to our town there is a wide area of grass verge which some ‘numb nut’ has decided is his personal car forecourt. There is usually one, sometimes two, cars parked there on the grass with For Sale signs in all the windows, and the cars change on a weekly basis.
The council’s response to this was a classic ‘head in the sand’ comment, and I quote “If you ever see more that two cars there then ring us again!” Brilliant – thanks for your help! ![Indifferent [:|]](/emoticons/emotion-8.gif)
