Re: CHAT for weekend competition 10/11 May 2008

    lol...I wanna vote for hevans!

Anyways...OK, slightly late review, but hey, I was very busy…I had to put a load of candles out with my King Charles Spaniel…

see if you can figure out why before you finish reading the review…

Also a brief review cos the sun is shining and there’s cold stella in the fridge, I have an appointment with the garden…

stevebedder…light and dark…very good work involved here, and fit’s the brief a treat…just a slight shame about the “ordinary” background (no offence to your back garden intended) I dunno, maybe I want the moon on a stick but the background is just a tad ordinary, like, if you’d taken your patio doors out into the countryside maybe.

But the “light” work is impressive. I figure it’ll be a contender on that score alone.

angus57...open and closed book…this has Sunday Times and V+A museum garden tools written all over it., Hmmm, lifestyle photography. Washed down with a glass of cab sav, yeah.

A really strong composition, even though its just a picture of a couple of books. I don’t know why but this works well I think.

jinky…You need hands…OK, I’m more of a tea leaf reading tarot card mumbo jumbo complete cobblers nonsense type myself…but I’ll read your palms if I must. This has a very humorous quality, chunky hard graft honest-as-the-day-is-long feel to it. I can see a significant portion of the votes heading your way, though fortunately you are unlikely to meet a tall handsome stranger.

Great detail and contrast in your grubby palms and I really like the bold chunky font which seems to echo the chunkiness of your honest hard working hands.

Erm yes, I think that’s right.

    Who pressed the shutter?

MarkD…ends of the earth…is this the bit of open heath-land on the road between Lepe and Beaulieau?

Looks like it anyway. Or is it the bit near Furzey gardens, near that big stone whatever its called.

North and South works well for the OPPOSITES theme…

But Southampton and Nomansland I figure are one and the same. I like the rural feel here and I have an affection for the area…so points scored for effort. The sign stands out very well from the background and good Depth of field too.

Makes me wanna go visit and drink loads of ringwoods 49’er.

MPelley…opposite way up. As Yaz once said “the only way is up”

But she was wrong…just ask Derby and Birmingham.

FIt’s the brief well…Its actually a really good shot and I have to admit, I prefer it the “right way up”

These shots of reflections Really need a mirror-like stillness on the water for them to work effectively upside down…In my humble op anyway/

Now can I put my monitor back the right way please.

shelf…the village bike…currently floundering in 15th place prior to a much anticipated late rush of well deserved votes…if only for the delicate work involved in suspending a small model from the guttering with cotton.

    Pure quality.

    Ah, Sturmey Archer.

Toggle chain…that’s something you don’t hear anymore.

Fiona Lewis…she sells sea shells…another Little and Large effort. Super choice. A nice composition, of the kind oft seen on greeting cards in rural craft shops, next to the little shop selling cream teas and buns.

    I like buns.

I also like the rustic colours and texture in this shot. Very effective indeed.

Maybe just cropped a little too tightly on the left side/

veggiesosage…pretty Poly,,,,yup, ever hear the one about two budgies sitting on a Perch, and one sez to the other “hmmm, can you smell fish?”

Or the two fish in a tank and one sez to the other…”how do you drive this thing?

Or the two cannibals eating a clown and one sez “Does this taste funny to you?”

But I digress, as is my customary wont.

Super bold colours and the way you’ve captured this, it does look like there’s a real dialogue going on between the two….so bonus points for the fluffy cutesey vibe. Any shot of animals that conveys some kind of “human” properties always seem to work.

    Like this one.

Wattsy…Dead or Alive…you spin me right round baby, right round.

What can I say,,,bula bula, this is stunning. Terrific light, fantastic texture in the wood.

The long shadow of the creature a very effective, erm…effect.

Ace processing, very well done for sure.

GMOKDC…young and old…as mick jagger once sang on the awesome LOOKING THROUGH THE PAST DARKLY album…“blow away dandelion”

Wasn’t sure about this at first but the more I see it, the more it works, the contrast between the dandelion clock and the big bold bright flower really stands out. And well done for the angle…how are your knees btw?

Dave Cornwell…shopping city paradiso. So much for a day out mugging people…WHERE IS EVERYONE?

This works really well as a metaphor for retail down-turn, economic decline and the watering down of societies moral code in general.

Aye, yup, that’d be about right guv.

I’m struggling a little to see the OPPOSITES theme here…but that could be a reflection on my own intrapersonal head space rather than this composition.

Certainly an interesting shot though. I like the urban clean lines and the sense of desertion.

irebel…pirats love……Well well well! What have we here, shiver me timbers, a Pirate duck,

And a blatant attempt to influence the voting…Faaantastic. A great idea which means you will not have to walk the plank this week…though you are free to spank it at your leisure.

I’ve never seen a black pirate duck before so this has come as a bit of an eye-opener for me. I suppose the OPPOSITE theme is reflected in the sweet little yellow duck being the focus of amorous attention of the cut throat Captain Blackduckbeard duck.

    Very Clever work.

Maybe just a tiny bit too much cropped from the right hand side.

But ducks rule…you get many extra points.

TringleWP…walk, don’t walk…another classic bit of work from the house of Tringle.

Reading / not reading. And I’m going to use my gag about her being upset again…yes, she looks almost beside herself…haha, lol, how I larfed. that’s my gag of the day.

Terrific editing and super composition…also great summer light and colours.

    And no Teddy?

you know this could become like the Eurovision song contest…

You might need to a “my little horse” on it to avoid winning all the time.

Joni…swan song…they sure are ugly ducklings. Young / old / big / little…works on all the right levels/

The best place I ever found for shooting swans is the HALFWAY HOUSE public house in Rickmansworth. They have a river running at the bottom of the garden, overhanging trees so you get great reflections off the dark water, and the sun is mostly behind you.

And they also sell beer…a great place for a bevy and afternoon duck shoot…also seem to be lots of dragon flies too.

Anyways, yup, the sun///its just on the wrong side \I think, you’ve shot the Dark Side of the Duck.

Also I think swan / duck shots work best either with them facing you, coming toward you or going sideways…here they seem to be going away from you out of the shot.

I’m not an expert, there’s a few great “duck-shooters” on the forum who will know better. for sure there'll be one or two looking at the baby going "piggy back" and go "aaaaaw, how cute"

    cute is always cool.

Nice effort though/ stick at it, roll up your jeans and wade to the other side.

moonlustie…hedge your bets…I see you need to trim your bush…love the great contrast of the green and yellow…quite effective.

I just wonder if a more abstract close up, face on , shot from right in front of the trees might work better, I dunno. The road and wall are sort of surplus to requirements and the sky seems a funny colour.

Very well spotted though, and a good idea. The right time of day too with the sun being where it was.

adesw…light and dark….but not as in chocolate. Has a dark dangerous feel to it, like most urban stair-wells seem to these days. Does what it sez on the tin, very dungeonesque too. (is there such a word? There is now.

For me this is a good idea but the bars being 2off-vertical doesn’t work. But then I like things to be straight.

Oldboy…old and new…Break out the oil of ulay baby…nice and simple composition, very effective…great contrasting colours too. This’ll get some votes/...good detail on the main leaves...a useful and effective DOF

JerryWSL…opposite sides. The Newport youth team. Looks like a Donegal kit actually.

Fit’s the bill, very bright and bold.

I like how you’ve shot them “headless” to emphasise the opposing colours of their kit, smart thinking.

    Who won?

Oh yeah…sack the grounds man too…I’ve never seen so many daisies on a pitch.

afidler…take off / landing, Badminton anyone?

A horse, a horse, my kingdom for thirty pieces of silver and twenty Bensons…I think this is a slightly more, erm …unusual take on the theme and I like it a lot. WELL PLANNED OUT…Great processing and a bright bold image. Strong natural light is spot on…Slight shame about the people behind the head of the horse that’s landing. But not much you could realistically do about that I guess. One of my favourites this week though.

But Pressage …heywhat’s that all about.

bodsao…opposites…its the real thing. As said in the CHAT,,,great processing (as is usually the case) OK with A JD…just for the taste of it…the red can stands out a treat and looks like its floating in space in front of the gradient, which is nice!…but sadly this then distracts from the diet / white can which is a sort of bit lost, not standing out enough. Maybe a less severe angle, more straighter if you know what I mean,,, would bring it to the fore a bit more.

Not sure…I do after all…NOT make any money out of product photography.

ogga lily…young and old…some feet, yup, that’d be right…four of them.

Might get a cutesy “aw how sweet” vote. Not from me, I’m saving my deciding vote for myself after a boost in the poll sometime tomorrow morning, for it is written

It’s a bit of a so so shot though it fit’s the brief…I’ve seen much better stuff from you before though, so I’ve got my cranky “could do better” head on…

    Oh yeah…

    …because he’s a snuffer dog.

Thanks, but I'll be honest, I didnt take it for the comp, or even for my gallery. I just saw it while heading up to the roof, and snapped it to remember for when I have a wider lens

Thought this might be a bit subtle so to explain my thoughts in regard to the OPPOSITES theme ... this was to contrast the two sides of a new retail development with the effects on the traditional high street; regeneration/degeneration. Although the two images are within 400 yards of each other they are worlds apart in other aspects.
Reason for desertion - 8am Sunday morning - didn't want to get hassled by security guards for being a threat to national security by taking photo's in the town centre!

I agree about the background, it could have been better. In that direction though it's pointing towards the flight path into Manchester Airport so was hoping to get some extra 'light' from the planes flying over. It was little late though and hence not that many planes going across.

Fingers crossed this week..... Smile [:)]

Not enough votes by the look of it! Re: who pressed the shutter you know my abilities from my moonshot but I found that by facing the wall on my knees  and shouting to my wife  to just press my remote button from where she was sipping pimms I was able to get my hands close enough to being in the right place / in focus at only about the 15th attempt.

As for hard work - what is that? Have to say yours was one of my favourite images this week - though if I am honest narrowly lost out to Tringle for my vote.Loved the juxtaposition and that it was a mountain bank finding its way up a rocky wheel!

Thanks for the votes so far - makes a change from my usual 1 or 2!

    GUY1970:

Great entries this week. I was out enjoying the sunshine so no time for creativity.

My vote has gone to Joni - Great shot and I am a sucker for cute bird shots. I love the way one lazy cygnet is being carried.

Will try and make time this weekend to enter.

Thank you soooooooooo much Guy, it was eh luckly shot! little cygnet kept disappearing under her wings.

Its been a while since I've been able to enter the weekend comp, wow tremendous efforts from everybody, the standard keeps getting better and better.

Great review Shelfy, thank you for taking the time and putting in the effort - its so valuable and an incredibly interesting read (are you an author?).

As far as my shot goes, you are right, I should have gotten in the water, waded to the other side and taken it, am I that committed I ask myself! Post risk assessment and all, I think not.

I think I have 3 votes this week and I'm very pleased, thank you, it appears I will not end up with a duck (ugh).

Tough choice this week (again...when are you people going to make it easier for us to decide?!). In the end I gave my vote to Jinky. I too was gardening this weekend (planting the mother's day plants...hope I put them in the right way up Confused [8-)]), and can sympathise with the shot.

Good review shelfy, I voted for angus57, I find so many opposites in his shot, paper v real, the paper is talking about ros'e and he has a glass of white, one mag is straight the other is at an angle, add to that its a well shot image and very inventive.

Great work from tringlewp ( again ) I also liked OldBoy and bodsao and adesw, if hevans had got the image in on time though it would have ran away with it I think.

Good work from everyone though you are a talanted bunch, and thanks for the sympathy vote for mine ( who ever voted for it )

thanks for the thanks everyone, appreciate it.

Kev, lol, Dungeonesque...very good. tickled me.

I enjoy doing the reviews, though felt it was slightly rushed this time out...too much sunshine to enjoy...gotta make the most of it out here...even though it brings with it the midges who love my english blood. the pesky fackers.

tricky choice this week for sure...I plumped for afidler, I just liked the colour and overall image...but there were 4 or five others very close behind. looks like voying could be close.

Re: CHAT for weekend competition 10/11 May 2008

Hey Guys, just to add to shelfy's (a)musings.....Big Smile [:D]

stevebedder - Great painting with light example and spot on - I wonder how many takes this took???  I agree with shelfy on the poor background - needed something a little more 'aesthetic' - again, no offence intended. Clever though and well executed.

angus57 - I like the comp of this and the idea but the fairly flat lighting gives no depth to the image. Fits the brief well and you could liven this up a bit by boosting the contrast.

jinky - great mono image jinky. Nice comp, contrast and well thought out title. Really like this and in my top 3.Nice work

MarkD - nice work, well composed and nice DOF. The flat lighting takes some of the impact from the image and again I think that boosting the contrast would have created a little more impact

MPelley - I can see what you were trying to achieve with this image but it doesn't really work for me as to work effectively, the reflection needs to be mirror like. I like the toning - this works well

shelfy - I really like this shelfy - nice indication of scale and nicely worked. My biggest crit is that the speckled background really detracts from the image but it is well lit, nice focus and in my top 3

Fiona Lewis - Nice interpretation of the theme and nearly a great image. It is a bit dark but I can see that if it was brighter then it may have blown the highlights on the shells. I feel that the central placement of the small shell breaks the flow of the image a little and placing this on the opposite corner of the image on a square crop would have been better.

veggiesosage - nice to see ya back veggie - Nice shot of the birds and a nicely timed capture. The long focal length needed a faster shutter speed to avoid the camera motion blur and the focal point is not quite sharp.

wattsy - Interesting wildlife shot! I quite like this but I feel that it would have been much better in a more natural environment. I like the strong lighting though.

GM0KDC - Good spot and a good interpretaton of the theme. The frame is a little too busy which takes the focus away from the flowers and I feel a little tidying of the scene would have allowed the flowers to stand out.  A combination of High ISO with a large aperature and fast shutter speed have introduced a lot of noise into the image as well. You did not realy need such a high shutter speed and so could have lowered the ISO to cut out the noise. I personally feel that a lower f stop would have created a more creative DOF.

Dave Cornwell - I hardly noticed the mono conversion on the right of the image and although this is well done, I don't personally feel that it adds to the image as the comp is not quite strong enough to demonstrate the stark contrast between an old shop (T-Mobile is not really retro!) and the spangly new.

iRebel - Clever editing and nice comp but the main duck is not quite in sharp enough focus and I suspect this is due to the sloooooooooow shutter speed. Nice idea though

Tringle WP - nice composite image well worked with the variance of the shutter speed to indicate the contrast of movement and stillness. I like this , the lighting is good, the pp woek seamless and well thought out. Nice work Howard

Joni - Cute family portrait of the big white ducks and the square crop nearly works. Difficult image to get the exposure spot on due to the bright white feathers and the dark water but I think you've done a good job there. The little fellas are a bit too close to the edge of the frame so opening out the crop could have helped there. The camera seems to have focussed behind the birds throwing the front coupe out of focus and make their fuzzy down look even fuzzier - closing down the aperature or pre-focussing may have made them pinsharp as I would expect with such a high shutter speed.

moonlustie - Spot on the theme but at this distance it looks a bit lost in the frame as the unsightly wall and bits of fencepost, although technically foreground interest, offer no real purpose in the image. A closer more contemporary grab of the contrast of greens with a shallower DOF would have been much better I feel so get back there and have a go!

adesw - true to the title but there is not really a focal point to the image and the big expanse of black makes that haf of the frame look a litle dead. The exposure of the light section is spot on though. Needs a focal point to drag the eye into the frame.

OldBoy - I really like this OldBoy - great interpretation of the theme well executed. The light, comp and DOF are spot on, great work and in my top 3 also.

Jerry WSL - Good idea Jerry and nearly works for me. I feel that as you have (maybe rightly in the current climate) cropped out the heads of the players, the addition of the third player is superfluous to the image and I feel this makes the image look 'wrong' whereas cropping close to the 2 tackling players only would have given a better scene. The contrast needs boosting a little as the colours and light are a little bit dull - inject some life into the scene!

afidler - another good composite image fitting the brief well. Good exposure control, reasonable shutter speed although I feel that this is halfway between showing movement and keeping the frame still and fits neither quite right. Removing the ghost horses and the ghost buggy would have been better as this unfortunately lets down the otherwise good editing skills.

bodsao - I really like this, demostrating excellent editing skills. The comp is not quite right, somewhere between rule of thirds and dead centre and I'd like to see one of the other! The reflection is spot on but it is a shame that the added gradient is quite banded, showing the fact that it was added as pp a little too obvious. Otherwise nice work and again in my top 3 (hope I've only said that 3 times!!)

ogga lily - I wondered if someone would do a take on this and it is a nice change from the big soles/little soles image we see so often. Nice textures of the background, good focus and nice exposue control. Ideally a more symmetrical image would be better but I supose they put their little tootsies where they want eh? Nice work.

Some good entries again and I would not be able to predict a winner here so good luck all!
