Hi all,

Comments welcome regarding the images below. 

I have posted them for three reasons, one because I am happy with them, two because I'm even happier with the Nikon 105mm Micro, and three, because I'd like to know what this plant is!

It was my first real use of this lens.  The flowers are starting to bloom in the garden, the light was overcast but bright so I thought I'd get out and give it a go.  I understand a fair bit about DoF, focal length, Macro photography etc, but I've not owned a macro lense of this length before and so in practice was really quite surprised by the limited dof.  It took me a while to get the hang of it! 

Also, I think that the quality of this lens is really good, with a good bokeh (I'm seeing this with all of my Nikon lenses actually). 

This one was for fun, I call it "Nuts"

The flower looks like a peony rose. But I'm quite possibly wrong.

Nice shots, btw. I've given up on flower shots, they always look horrible and don't do the plant justice.

Thanks Hugh, a peony rose it seems to be (easy to Google once you know where to start!).

I like taking the flower shots, not so much to do the flower justice.  What I mean is it's good skills training and helps keep the mind ticking over and because I can control the environment I can experiment.  I'm not having to climb a mountain or wait for that perfect moment!  It slows me down a bit too, using the tripod, thinking about the settings a bit longer, and try endless compositions.

And the first one will be gracing our wall.  Not sure which wall yet...

I have just started taking photographs, but i think that all these photos look super.  I think it will look great on whatever wall you choose to put it on.  I am also from Co Durham.  Might see you around .  occ

Glad to hear the first will make it onto the wall.  If you don't mind me saying, it has a certain sexual overtone about it, but then flowers, being the form of reproduction for a plant, have long had that connotation.

Regardless, you've done a better job than I ever have with flowers.

PS. The peonies are my wife's favourite flower, so it was an easy identify for me.

I don't mind at all H - It's actually exactly what I thought when composing the shot, hence why I rotated the image 90' CCW.  It might set a new theme for my garden photographs actually... 

occ, welcome to the forum and thank you for your kind comments.  How do you know you haven't already seen me around...    I hope that you enjoy your new hobbie, you can learn a lot from this forum.  The searches reveal lots of helpful advice, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

I've been looking at the different macro lenses available as I only have extension tubes for close ups. I was pretty bamboozled but have about narrowed it down to the new Nikkor 105mm. Any more feedback on this lens?

My feedback: it's a wonderful lens.

As Martin says, the bokeh is great - you get lovely smooth out of focus areas that print beautifully. That's important because with macro photography often a lot of the picture is blurred to some extent. It's long enough that you can have some distance from your subject. And VR is very useful for any handheld work you may do.

The Nikon 105mm F2.8 VR macro is a cracking lens, but also consider the Nikon 60mm F2.8, as the older version can be brought for about £260. This is also a cracking lens but without VR, and yes I have both.

Thanks for the comments - just to say mine isn't the VR version, it's the AF "F" version of the lens.  Either way as has been said it's a great lens, and I'm not bothered about VR.  I was going to go for the Tamron 90mm but I got the Nikon for £290
