advice please - DOG RACING photography

I'm going to Walthamstow Dogs racing tomorrow evening, never been before, and was wondering if you had some advice on how to take good pictures. As it's in the evening 7-11pm, I imagine it will be quite dark, or maybe it's flood-lit? Nor do I know how close I can get...

I've got a Canon eos 400d and 18-55mm f3.5-f5.6 kit lens (one of the old ones, not the new IS mark II or whatever) and a Sigma 70-300mm f.4-5.6 DG Macro.

Which would be better? maybe the Sigma one if I can't get that close? And what if it's dark, do I need to bring a tripod?

Or just shoot in shutter priority and hope it will be light enough?

I've owned my camera for 3 weeks now, and have never used P or autofocus, is now the time to start? =P

Advice & help very much appreciated!

Re: advice please - DOG RACING photography

Hmm, tricky.  Hopefully someone will be along who has actually done this, but my advice based on what I have seen is:

They move fast, really fast, so the further away that you are the easier the panning will be, for this reason take the 70-300 and use it at the 200-300 range.  A tripod probably won't be any use, a monopod might be.  The stadium will most likely be floodlit so you should have good light.

You need to think what sort of image you want to create.  Do you want to show the speed of the dogs against a blurred background?  If so I'd go with a shutter speed of perhaps 1/100th second and try panning (depending on the focal length and how steady you are.  If you're unsteady and not using a monopod then maybe go upto 500th second), you can use the widest apperture you have with this technique as the background will be a blur anyway, so I'd choose shutter priority and the lowest ISO that the lighting will allow.  If you want to freeze the action you'll need a much faster shutter speed.  I'm not sure, but would guess 1000th second would be a good start.

You will need continuous autofocus, unless you want to pre-focus on a point and take the photo of the dogs at this point.

Hope this gives you some ideas before someone comes along who has actually taken dog racing pics!

    Hi

I have never been to a dog track, if it is light, you may need to adjust the auto white balance, (AWB) to compensate. I would fire off a few shots and play with the AWB and see what gives you the best results.

tripods are great, but you may want to pan with the dogs as they race round, so a monopod may be a better bet.

Also may be play with the bracketing to let more light in. My guess is you will need at least an IOS of 200 or even 400 but as stated above you need to watch the noise! take the shot then in view mode zoom in onto the background, and see.

    enjoy

my tripod has a swivel-head, woo!! I'll practice my panning when I get home from work today (yes I'm at work...Embarrassed [:$]Stick out tongue [:P] the outing tomorrow is with work too, should be fun!).

Auto white balance won't let any more light in - just alter the colour. I think you may have meant to say Exposure compensation Big Smile [:D]

Bracketing will be of some use - but you are better just to take a couple of test shots, look at the hystogram and adjust the exposure compensation to suit.

From my memory of Perry Barr dog track its lit by spots - but although ok to our eyes, is not that bright - so I would have said you would be up at ISO 800+ to get some decent shutter speeds to freeze the dogs - and learn to pan.

first few races should have enough natural light to get a few good shots, panning is a good idea, dont use flash,  a good thing to try is get the dogs leaving the traps, heres a pic taken at Nottingham dog track, the rails got in the way, lol. cheers martyn

Re: advice please - DOG RACING photography

Hiya, I'm a self taught amateur photographer and the bulk of my photography is shooting racing dogs. Most of my work can be viewed on the link if anyone is interested but bear in mind that the people I race with a lot of the time want to see where their dogs position was in a race so consistant pretty shots with low depth of field aren't neccesarily my forte. I'm also expected to shoot every race so I don't get thanked for trashing any that I personally may feel are inferior.  http://wildwhippies.myphotoalbum.com/

Must admit, I've never used compensation with AWB as I haven't really found it an issue on bend tracks, it's more an issue for me in the summer with dogs running on grass straight tracks. My setup is a 1D Mklll which (thankfully) hasn't had some of the AF issues that I've been hearing about. I use a sigma 70-200mm f2.8 on the bends and either canon 50mm f1.2, canon 28-135 f3.5 or the sigma on the straight tracks depending on what 'story' I want to tell of the days racing. Settings wise I try to keep speeds as 1/2500 to freeze the action and try to keep a decent depth of field in close races.

It does help immensly to 'know' the dogs running, some will be clear leaders whilst others may have the ability of powering up towards the end of a race. It's them dogs that can mess up your shot especially if your depth of field is limited.

Whilst most my shooting is during the day, I have shot at night and resorted to f1.2 and panning as the light is never enough at the particular flapping tracks I've been shooting at, however, the big NGRC tracks like Walthamstow may be better.

Unfortunately I believe Walthamstow is closing in August but I've been told they do daytime greyhound racing on a Mondays and welcome photographers down there. Good luck.
