I set out to capture the setting sun over a small lake in a local park. Didn't work out at all, either the camera isn't up to it, or I haven't mastered the right settings yet. On the way to the lake however, I was struck by the beautiful light slanting through the trees and took a few pictures of that as well. When I saw the pictures on the screen at home (I'm partially sighted and only get a 'rough' impression on the camera's lcd screen.) I realised the photo of the slanting light was way better than any of the sunsets. 

Looking at the entries in this category, I realised my simple sunset would not have stood a chance anyway, as it would have to compete with the most breathtaking sunsets and scenery. In a way, my sunlit lane stands out.

I did not use any special techniques, just autobracket and I may have changed the White Balance setting to 'sun,' but I'm not even sure of that.

Any comments/advice welcome.

I decided to upload a sunset shot of mine which is one of my favourites.  I have had this made into a canvas and it is now proudly displayed on the wall of my parents house.  I actually took an almost identical photo in the same spot several years earlier using 35mm film.  As I say, it's one that I keep coming back to over and over so I thought it worthy of submission.  No filters were used, I metered from a spot just above the sun and set the white balance in camera a shade warmer to enhance the colours.

Thanks! I'm trying to find  new angles to create different photographs, as in most fields the 'normal' angles are already done with more insight and technical mastery than I'll ever manage.

Ive litterally JUST turned 18 and ive only done my 2 years of photography in college and dont really have feedback from anyone about my images, havnt even got my grades yet lol Any thoughts on these 2 would be appreciated.

Hi Grant - love your shot of the Opera House. My husband and I came down to Sydney in June and stayed at the Four Seasons. I must have taken hundreds of shots of the bridge and opera house - i even entered a couple in the comp! It's fantastic to see the way everyone interprets such a famous iconic landmark and makes it their own. i love the way the lights are coming from below for your shots.

Had to get up early for this shot - had checked the weather night before and forecast was for cloud patches but sunny. This was taken before sun rose so the underside of the clouds was lit up. set up on tripod and gave five second exposure focusing third way in

i really like the way the rocks lead the eye to the horizon and the silhouettes of the martello tower.

Amazing photo, very haunting.

This is one of my D2D shots (http://poty2008.dcmag.co.uk/3913562627956027760/sunset-by-the-hill.html).  I'd high-tailed out of the house after returning from shopping to find my fiancé and his father hadn't yet finished my bathroom.

Cameras may not lie but light can provide illusions - http://poty2008.dcmag.co.uk/3913562627113329316/autumn-fire.html as shown using a torch in the dark. The transparent leaves glow (like tongues of fire) and the veins with their shadow add an interesting illusion (as though being projected to the top surface).
