    PC advice - virus

This is for someone I work with - can anyone help?

Yesterday they had a virus warning on their PC - scanned with Avast anti-virus which found and said it had removed it. Now when switching on everything seems OK at first- normal desktop and wallpaper - but it then overlays the screen with a blank page which is impossible to move, shrink or delete. You can still open and use programmes but when you close the programme the white screen is there, covering about 2 thirds of the screen.

    Any ideas?

    Hi Sue

Did the anti-virus software give a name for the virus it had removed (often a filename)? Typing this into Google will often bring up some search results, with useful suggestions for getting rid of it.

On the search results, make sure you only go to links that are reputable anti-virus companies, such as Norton and McAfee (virus writers will often seed the internet with tools that supposedly remove viruses, but actually install something much worse).

In future, it's probably worth creating yourself a new profile (username), and only putting the user in the 'Users' group, rather than it being an admin account (the default when you create the first users on your PC in XP). This would mean that any future malware downloaded has less access to your system. Send me a PM if you want some more advice on doing this.

    Hope this helps

    Re: PC advice - virus

There is a Review of this package by Computer Shopper. Some antivirus software removes Windows files, as they think they are a virus, so it's possible this may have happened in this case. So as Chris says, find out what file has been removed, as it may be part of this problem. Big Smile [:D]

You could always try a restore to a date previous to this problem.Smile [:)]
