What hand do you write with?
Which eye do you use to look through the view finder?

I thought it would be interesting to know, statistics say 10% of people are left handed, but about 33% are left-eyed?

And if you are left handed or left eyed, do you ever feel that cameras are made awkwardly with right handed/eyed people in mind only?

Some people think having a battery-grip on your camera is really beneficial if you're left-handed, do you agree?

Personally, I was left handed, but write with my right hand (in school they used to tie my left hand to my back so I wouldn't use it, I still write with my right hand but my left hand is stronger). Anyways, I don't have any problems holding an SLR, but my left-eyedness can be annoying.

I meant to say the battery grip is better if you're left-eyed, because I can use the shutter button on the grip (when shooting ladscape!) and then won't get my face in the way of my hand.

I have voted right handed/right eyed - but I can write equally as bad with both hands (But not as quick with my left!) and I can use either eye in the view finder - but I tend to use the right more!

But there wasn't a box for that

I'm right handed, left eyed, but the eye preference is due to a slight myopia in it. The left eye doesn't require corrections. Yes, I know you can adjust the diopter of the camera viewfinder, but this habit is left over from years past when the diopter correction was -1 and Nikon didn't provide the eyepiece for the FM. Hence I just got used to using the left eye.

Mmm... you've just reminded me of something which could explain why I feel I'm struggling with focussing.  Even though I'm right handed and use my right eye with the viewfinder (and that's how I voted) I am, in fact, left eye dominant (I believe unusual in a right-handed person) .... wonder if that will make a difference - will try that tonight when I get home from work!

At least the digital cameras don't have the film winding lever. I used to stab myself repeatedly in the right eye when looking through the Nikon FM's viewfinder when the lever was slightly out.

I was taught to use my left eye to allow me to use my forehead and cheek bones to brace the camera for a steadier grip - it worked for me then and it works for me now... I am right handed but find if I use my right eye I get more camera shake as my right hand has no support....

Firstly, hello all from a new member and many thanks for this forum. An added bonus to the mag.
    Regarding eyes: From my ancient days of clay Pigeon shooting I was taught a simple (and very basic) technique for discovering your 'Dominant' eye. That is if you have two eyes that you think are equal in vision quality. The method was to hold up one finger and line it up with a distant vertical object like a tree, doorframe or whatever whilst looking through both eyes. (Distant being the other side of the room if you wish). By closing one eye at a time you'll see that one of them will be nearer the mark than the other, that will be your dominant eye (or so it was thought). Didn't benefit me one iota when it came to hitting the clays or taking good photographs come to that but I thought it might be of interest for my first post. Ray

I am right handed but left eye dominant. I read that left eye dominant people, tend to take pictures that have the verticals leaning to one side. This is definitely true in my case,no matter how much care I take, I always have to straighten it up in photoshop.

I thought I was the only one...

If it's a busy place an I'm waiting for people to clear the shot/not walk into it the I use both eyes   One on the viewfinder and one seeing the wider picture.  It has really been useful for me over the years to.  Not so important with the delete button I guess but it was when film cost money!

I guess it doesn't really matter does it?  You just get used to using things the way they are.  Take driving a car for example, I'm sure left handed people don't find it anymore difficult than right handed people.  Actually Stephanie disagrees, she does find it difficult, but I don't think that has anything to do with her being left handed
