    Re: Nikon D300 Users

I got on well Bob, but more practice is definitely needed! Now I've worked out the best options for panning generally I need to get better at following the subject and snapping at the right times - I found it very easy to take literally hundreds of pictures, of which only a smallish percentage really work. My little friend really wants some cool pics showing him sharp but the background very blurred so is very happy to model again.

I also tried the auto ISO function for some indoor candids and really liked it. Once you've set the paramaters the numbers of adjustments required as light changes are much reduced and so I could concentrate on catching expressions and got lots more 'keepers' than I normally would. I wouldn't have thought of it but for this thread so thanks very much. Big Smile [:D]

    Re: Nikon D300 Users

Glad its all working out Eileen, my daughter had our first grandchild this week Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D] and my wife and I have been with her every day so I'm going to be missing for a wee while I think, but the D300 has already taken loads of great images of her. I have posted one but more of a trial of colour balance than anything else, I have a new printer and I'm getting different results on screen and printer than I would expect so I have royaly screwed up my settings.

Have you posted any of the shots you took, it would be good to know what lens you used and the setup that worked best for you, I have a chance of taking shots of some birds of prey in flight that will be challanging Smile [:)]

    Re: Nikon D300 Users

Hi everyone, just found this site and have read with interest some of your comments, and that cd on using the D300 think I might buy that, I would like your thoughts and others on here on the pricing of the D700 seems to me your paying almost double just for a sensor and a few minor differences, and from what i have read so far the image quality is the same as our D300's bit less noise reduction so really how do they come up with the price difference, any comments?

    Re: Nikon D300 Users

Many congratulations Bob - great news. Big Smile [:D]Party!!! [<:o)]

I haven't posted any yet as I'm really behind with processing my images. I hope to catch up soon and I'll post a few with settings details. Look forward to seeing a few of the new family member in exchange.

Alco, I believe the sensor is the same as that in the D3, and that it also has the same processing engine. I think also that the build quality is even more solid. The D3 is a pretty revolutionary piece of kit with exceptional image quality and ISO range and I imagine that the D700 is a way of getting value out of the R&D effort. I think that a full frame camera is quite a different beast from the D300 and not a simple upgrade. The list price is expensive just now but I should think it'll become cheaper fairly soon. The nearest equivalent is the Canon 5D, which is a few years old now and still costs around £1350.

I am curious about how many they'll sell in the early months, as many of their potential customers will have recently bought either the D300 or D3 and few will either want or be able to afford to buy another new camera so soon. Canon owners are likely to be waiting for the D5 upgrade, and I hear that some of the other makers are also planning full frame DSLRs. Interesting times...

    Re: Nikon D300 Users

Nikon have relesed 2 more picture controls for the D300, the camera came with

Standard, Neutral,Vivid and Monocrome, browsing the site I've found Portrait and Landscape. Full instructions are given on the site of how to download and install them, I recomend you read it it only takes a few mins, my first attempt to load them failed I decided to put both files on the chip and try adding them both at the same time and that worked, I put it down to not reading the instruction hence my warning, RTFM as my dad would say ( read the Fn manual) I've not tried them out as I've just loaded them but the shots inside the house show good results.

    http://nikonimglib.com/opc/index.html.en

This is the link to the site I used, I suspect the configurations will be very similar to the ones you got from the USA site. There is of course no reason why we don't create our own as that's one of the fantastic things about the D300. Good luck let me know if you have any results you are fond off. The problem is the same image will look different depending on the monitor in use at the time, so we could be chasing rainbows Smile [:)]

    Re: Nikon D300 Users

Two of my focus exercise shots below as promised. Still some work to do but getting better with practice I think.

This shot was taken at 1/200 sec, on continuous servo mode and dynamic area AF. I find this combination increases the number of shots that are in focus when I'm shooting moving subjects. It was taken in single frame release mode.

The next is an attempt at panning, so settings much as before but I used continuous release mode. It's quite hard to try this in a smallish garden so I think we need to try next in a larger space - perhaps running along the beach front.

Amateur Photographer are doing a feature on getting the best from the D300 next week, and are to major on the AF system so you may want to invest in a copy. Big Smile [:D]

Has anyone else tried new techniques or options with the D300 recently?
