    Battery problem, any ideas?

I have a canon compact camera as well as my DSLR. It takes 2x AA batteries so I bough some Energizer 2500mah batteries and compact charger. When I charge the 4 batteries up I put 2 in the camera and 2 for spare in case or in a drawer. When the batteries run out in my camera I put the spare ones in and they are always flat as a pancake. I thought maybe they were touching metal in the case (zip) so tried leaving them in a drawer but it makes no difference. The ones in the camera last longer than the ones out of it. If I try batteries charged up a few days ago in my camera they flash almost flat. Why are they discharging so fast (even faster than ones in camera)? It's not a camera problem, just explaining how I use the batteries. I sent energizer an email to ask what the problem could be. They didn't give me any help or answer to why, but just sent me a new pack of batteries. These do the same thing. I told the guy in Jessops and he said the charger may be faulty. Any ideas? I may just buy a new set of batteries and charger, Jessops brand, but wondering why I have these probs. You brainy folk on here might know (you usually do!).

Put the energizers in the bin and buy 4 Hybrio AA 2100mha. They hold 80% charge for 6 months and 70% for a year.... Problem solved!

Wilkinsons have these at good prices...

    Re: Battery problem, any ideas?

Recently bought a Canon A560 to carry everywhere, I find it to be power hungry for its size and modern tech. NiMH's shouldn't have recharge* and memory problems; might be a strange idea, but is it always one pair or even one cell that gives up - you only need one dud out of two to render the camera useless.  Also, does the charger have a switch to charge either 2 or 4 batteries - I've accidentally 'charged' only 2 out of 4 cells more than once Embarrassed [:$]

*As with anything manufactured, there will be occasional duds,  I had/have a pukka Canon BP-511 Li-ion for my 300D that will now manage around 10-20 images before dying...

I've been using 2 sets of 4 2800mah 7dayshop AA batteries for over a year now with my flashgun and they work well and the spares hold there charge well, cheap too :)

Just a thought (I've done this myself, once!) You have set the charger for four batteries and not just two haven't you?

And in keeping with that theme, there was a review ofr IMedion 2100mAh batteries by David Corfield who says....'proving to be the best set of cells I've ever used'. They supposedly retain 85% of charge after one year of storage and rechargeable up to 1,000 times.

Specs: Part No. MHRAA14, Packageing 4pcs with carrying case, Size AA, 1.2V, Capacity: typical 211mAh, price £11.95 for four. Contact www.mahaenergy.com

This is the charger I use

I can't see anywhere where you can select to charge 2 or 4 batteries. It just says that to charge only two, make sure they are either both on left side or both on right. Thinking about it I think I have charged a full 4 set a put them in my camera case for 2 spare sets and when it's come to changing none have worked, so maybe the side theory is out. Altho I will go and charge 2 on the right side now, see if they work in camera and then leave in my drawer and try and few days later and see what happens.

    Re: Battery problem, any ideas?

I went to wilkinsons today to have a look at the hybrios,  i didn't buy them as i was unsure if they were nimh, looked on the uniross website, and it seems the + series of hybrio batteries are nimh. Only problem is theres no mention anywhere of their  capacity!(e.g.2500mah), so it could be a problem of a battery that you dont have to charge , but when you do go to use it you only get say the number of photos you would with an alkaline battery.or less lolBig Smile [:D]i just sent them an email. If anyone is using these new types of batteries could you give us some info as to how long they last? thanks

    Re: Battery problem, any ideas?

I use the standard Hybrio - They are marked Ni Mh and are rated at 2100MaH. They work well in my S3 IS Camera and my Canon 420Ex Flashgun, and they hold their charge well if stored.  Dont let anyone try to sell you a more expensive version - these work very well.

I think they were about 6.99 for a pack of 4 in wilkinson which is good value, though they can only be recharged 500 times !

.........though they can only be recharged 500 times !

this is generally speaking a conservative figure and if the batteries are 'looked after' will often exceed this.

I wonder why they aren't advertised more - you see countless adverts for duracell and energizer but not these?

    Re: Battery problem, any ideas?

Just decided to do a bit of reading last night and decided to flick through the Digital SLR handbook that came free with DC mag issue 68. I just got reading the accessories page and there was a handy tip section that said "Rechargeable batteries for your flashgun can save a fortune, but NiMH rechargeables tend to go flat even when they're not doing anything. Instead, try Uniross Hybrio batteries, which give you the best of both worlds - long life when in use, without going flat when they're not. A set of four AA Hybrio batteries costs around £5".

Sounds like what you guys were talking about. Do they need a different charger? i.e. a Uniross one and not my energizer one? When you say Wilkinson, are you talking about the high street bargain shop or the Wilkinson Camera website shop?

I will be testing the 2 batteries I charged up on the right hand side soon, if they are dead then I know the whole package is rubbish. If so I will be buying something new and the Uniross stuff sound pretty good. I have seen them in Currys and Jessops before but didn't know much about the brand.

P.S. I am slightly confused, you say these Uniross hybrio are still NiMH? The mag article says try hybrio instead of NiMH.

Are these the Uniross hybrio long life + that people have been talking about? Could you give me a web link to somewhere that shows what I should be looking for, packaging etc? Do you use these batteries?

I'm just sick of my batteries running out, putting in new charged ones and them being flat as a pancake and then missing the shots!
