Hi peeps, I am having some major problems with Elements 5 and trying to print a shot and I know I am doing something wrong I just don't know what....

I am trying to print the shot below as 6x4 borderless print using an HP PSC1600 at maximum dpi on hp photo paper (I do have some kodak as well)

However when I print it off on the very far right hand side I get a weird pink colour line then a bit of border (the pinkish line is roughly in line with the 2nd set of  dark windows into frame on the house at the top of the picture) The border is about 3.5mm on the far right. There is no problem with the printer (it printed off a test page and colours are fne) and cartridge is a  genuine hp tri-colour photo cartrdidge and a separate black hp photo cartridge. Also the image looks very grainy.....the problem is I have another 3 shots to print off today and give to someone this evening in return for £20.00 (dunno why they want to pay me but they saw the shots on the pc and want them for a frame they've bought)....

So how do I set it to print 6x4 borderless, without strange pink lines and a bit of border, and should I use maximum or best DPI? Please help if you can as otherwise this is going to drive me up the wall

Update

I have changed the colour cartridge (again a genuine hp tri-colour vivera photo jobby)

 

I tried printing this one out (yes I know the highlights are blown putting that aside)

When it came out of the printer again the whole print has a pink cast, it's very very grainy, the yellow at the top looks completely wrong more of a pinky cream colour than the bright vibrant yellow shown here, and the nice warm red shown here looks more like the pinky red you see in a sunset....

Not sure which orientation you are feeding paper, but I'm presuming the banding is horizontal as the head traverses the paper. Trying to remember if an HP print head is still part of, or separate from, the ink cartridge - have you done a head clean and calibration?

I'm presuming the banding has now gone as Hp cartridges contain the print heads so when you change it you also change the print heads so clening them as previuosly suggested is a mute point.

That bring me to the conclussion that it may be down to colour mangment and elements and printer settings you are using. What colour space are you using as HP printers native colour space is srgb?

To be honest without knowing exactly waht you are doing and more info its hard to offer concrete advise.

 The graineness could be down to image resolution or noise, as a rule of thumb if you can see noise at 50% magnifacation in Elements then it will be clearly visable in print.

Even if the head is integral to the cartridge it may still need calibration before use - particularly if different carts/heads are being hot-swapped.

Agreed but HP printers do this automaticly as a matter of course when a new cartridge/ print head is installed (at least mine does) and so I had already taken that as a given.

Guys sorry for the late update and thanks for all the advice, I did a full calibration, a head clean etc and it still made no difference, so went & got a new printer an HPC4180 which takes the same cartridges as the C1600 and Argoose had it for £39.99 plus a fiver for a +2 warranty which made it worthwhile (and as the Epson R2400etc are WAAAAY out of my price range), installed it set it up, and it's done a reasonable job, the yellow on RX150 is a little darker in the print than on the screen but it is passable.....so thanks for all the advice .....but on a slightly different vein on the first shot above the boat in the foreground when printed as a 6x4 Borderless from the Elements 5 selection, it is cutting off the bottom half of the boat and unless I crop the top part of the picture I can't get it right....guess T189 OU course didn't each us everything about elements

Regarding the cropping, you're trying to print at 6x4, which is a 3:2 ratio. The picture doesn't look like its 3:2, it looks closer to 4:3 to me - what camera did you use?(Sorry I can't remember if you said at the beginning). As a general rule (and before anyone pipes up, I know there are exceptions) slrs take pictures in the 3:2 format and compacts / bridges are 4:3.

The upshot is that if you shoot in one ratio, and print in another, some cropping will always be necessary.

You stood to make £20 from the images but had to buy a new printer?? Ahh well suppose it will make some more money back if you keep selling images!! lol

Yup it's a bridge (Fuji S6500fd) and didn't take into account the ratio doughnut that I am that explains that...as to buying a new printer the old one was about 3 years old and has more than served its purpose, and ok the new one has cost £45.00 in  total but working that out at a fiver per 6x4 print if I should be so lucky....I just need to sell 5 more prints (don't think it's gonna happen though think my boss is just feeling generous) thanks for the hints and tips guys and again sorry for the late reply couldn't get online last night......
