    Flash Photography

    Hi,

I bought a 430 EX not long ago and a Gary Fong Universal Diffuser.  Does anyone know any good books on using flash effectively?  I want to get into portraiture work if I can ever talk anyone into being my guinea pig, but I also shoot a lot of landscapes and stuff.

    Thanks,
    Marcus

    Re: Flash Photography

I would say, take it off camera, and read through strobist.

I agree that Strobist is essential reading. Try the link above also which has lots of useful advice, specifically related to portraiture. I get loads of good tips from it and there's also a "basic principles" section that is really useful. I plan to keep reading it until I finally get it all into my head... Confused [8-)]

I'm not sure I have the nerve to strangle my SB800 though (see the July 17 post).

I've never seen any book which is as useful as these two sites on this subject.

    Re: Flash Photography

Hi agree with Eileen on this and the link she kindly provided will give you a great deal to consider. You should also check out utube for videos and demo's they can be quite good once you cut through the dross of people who really don't have a clue.

Lighting is very complex and you never stop learning, which in my view is a good thing, as great photography is a journey not a destination.

My advice is try things out yourself, much of the lighting techniques I use are not from books or things I've read but purely from methods that I have invented through expereince. For instance on a general scale people oftne think of flash as a substitute for not increasing ISO however some of the best images and photography I've seen have been born from mixing the two. Don't forget that quaility of light is the key in most cases not 'quantity', a lot of people make the mistake of over lighting a situation and also trying to get too complex. I use a couple of SB800 on radio triggers (skyport) and also a Elinchrom Ranger system however most times I use only 3 lights, this being 2 heads and of course the sun, never forget the sun is a light source and possibly your most controllable one!

    Good luck

I've posted a example below of a shot using 2 heads, one head to the right with a diffuser and one to the left fireing hard into the door area.

    Re: Flash Photography

Great.  Thanks for the information.  I'll start spending some time on those two sites and hopefully start posting some results at some point.

Bootneck, I love the color in that photo.  Great shot, for sure.  I also play the guitar which is another one of those things that's a constant, life long learning process.  So I'm used to that mindset.  Being that I just barely picked up my first flash, I need to figure out what to do with the thing Smile [:)]

Though Ive seen it before, thats a great pic Tim.

I just got bored and tried the chicken grip thing on my sb800.

It worked Big Smile [:D] Though it was a lil scary!

    Re: Flash Photography

Great shot Tim.  I'm guessing that it was taken in daylight?

I tried this yesterday, using an apperture of 22 and a shutter speed of 125th at ISO100 to underexpose the scene.  I then used my SB800 to try and light the subject.  It wasn't working (the whole scene was underexposed still) and I seem to think that the day was to bright and my flashgun wasn't bright enough?  If this is teh case I guess there's not much I can do about this?  Would an ND filter help, allowing me to underexpose the background with a wider aperture giving the flash less work to do?  Or am I way off the mark with what's happening here Confused [8-)]

    Re: Flash Photography

Hi Martin, try high speed fill in and dail up the shutter speed once you've metered to take the surrounding area down approx 2 stops shooting with the light and up to 5 stops straight into the light, hope this makes sense...

    Example below

    Re: Flash Photography

@Tim - love the equipment shot. There are some major w/s from that Ranger kit though Wink [;)] What is lighting the pack on the left? Spill from the octa or have you flagged the front light?

@Martin - I suspect you are too far away......at ISO100/f22 an SB800 will illuminate a subject about 1.5 - 2 m away. ND won't really help on this occasion because it will filter the flash as well as ambient. Pushing the shutter up to 1/200 should drop aperture to f16 which will give you something like 2 - 3m reach.

Add another SB800 to push this up by 1.4X (or 3 more to double it....). Going to 1/250s should in theory give you more reach but on my D3 it seems to reduce the effective power of the gun (i.e. FP mode is coming in early - I think Tim mentioned this issue a while ago).

Or you could put the flashgun closer.
Kidography. It's like photography. But more fun.

    Re: Flash Photography

I've noticed that, occasionally when using off camera flash at 1/250 I still get the curtain effect to a small degree. Never really worked it out, as the D200 is supposed to be able to sync at that speed.

    Re: Flash Photography

    Hi Tim,

I think I get what you mean, but it doesn't read very clearly.

Are you saying - meter for the ambient light as normal, then underexpose this setting by 2 stops to darken the background, then use the flash to illuminate the foreground?
