Has your 180 mm come in yet?  How's the puppy?  Had time to work on anything lately?

Hi Marcus, I've had to re order from another supplier as the first one said they were no longer available and they were advertising it as in stock on their web site, this week I hope. As well as the pup my daughter has given us our first grandchild who has had to spend the second week in hospital ( is that violins I hear ) they are doing fine but other than a trip here I'm not able to dedicate much time behind the viewfinder, the pup continues to amuse me all the time. I'll post some images from the new lens ASAP, thanks asking .

Here is a shot of a small frog, I'm very impressed by the D300s lack of noise at the lowest ISO setting, I've never used it before normaly I would use 200. I posted the full size image in my gallery.

Hi Chris, Orchids are tough, all the details seems to fade as you get closer, nice picture good colours, I've also been doing orchids today, this was my Nikon 60mm lense I'm waiting for a Nikon 200mm to arrive but no sighn of it after 3 weeks.

I think this should be called the pheonix orchid can you see what I meen.

I want some magnetic flowers Craig, I've been trying to get some hoverflies today, but the just keep flying off, what length is your lens, I only ask so I can gauge how close you are getting to them. Good shots well done by the way

Macro is not one of my strong points lol this guy landed on the office chair today and it's a lousy shot handheld at full 300mm on macro but i still wanna know what it is if anyone knows?

Can I ask a general question here and that is by what parameters are you guys and gals judging whether an image is a 'macro' or, what I would call a close-up?

I'm using a Canon 100mm 2.8 USM, closests point is about 31cm i think.

I sat there for a while and pulled down the flower closer to me (and so i could rest the lens on my knees) and one landed pretty much straight away.

As this was never formally standardised, it's pretty much up open to interpretation. Traditionally, people talked about macro as meaning 1:1 (film size to subject ie. subject is life size on the negative) or more. However, most manufacturers of equipment, apart from Nikon, have a more liberal view. I tend to see 'close up' as equalling 'macro', myself.

I see what you mean, though. Some lenses manufacturers talk about 1:3.5 being macro, which is maybe a bit of a stretch.

Um - to me the butterfly for example would fall in the category of 'close-up' whilst some of macrojunkies(?) images where one can almost see the insects stomach contents by looking at the pupils would be classed as 'macro'. Hence the reason for asking as obviously different people are having a different view - or maybe it's the same and mine is different. This is not a criticism you understand, simply an attempt to gain some understanding.
