Shoot the Moon - TONIGHT !

If anyone's really keen, and you are relatively cloudless tonight, tonight's full moon is the closest and biggest of 2006.  Why?  The Moon's orbit is lopsided: one side is closer to Earth than the other. When the Moon turns full on Sept 7th, it will be on the close side, making it seem a bit wider than usual. Look for the extra-wide Moon rising in the east at sunset--very pretty.  Big Smile [:D]
And as a bonus...... A Lunar Eclipse.... Cool [H]  If you live in eastern Europe, Asia, Africa or Oz, you might also see a partial lunar eclipse tonight. The moon will dip into the Earth's shadow for about 90 minutes around 18.51 GMT. Only around 19% of the moon will be covered, but that's enough for a nice display and maybe a fine shot ?  Jane.

Its easy to photograph - but getting the exposure right is something else! I managed an ok shot, 1/200 and f/8 but my lens just isn't long enough! 320mm (35mm Equiv) is just too short - could have done with a 600mm!

My longest lens is only 210. But with f/10 and 1/500s and a significant amount of cropping (read digital zooming - factor of 10 zoom [3000x2000 pixels to only 300x300]) I have the following to offer - not spectacular, but still...it's the moon.

I had a go but have not set up the means of posting the image. I used my 300D with Sigma 70-300 lens ISO 400 1/200 @ f16 with manual focus. I got a result I am happy with and having seen others here I now know the lens is better than I was told it would be.

Wonderfulpics. It's very cloudy in Las Vegas, so this is the best one I got. Great clouds, but I'm still overexposing the moon. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Okay, it finally cleared up. I'm limited to 200mm, so I don't have Lurkalot's detail (I guess for some things size does matter!).

The moon is in bright daylight, and so needs to be exposed accordingly. The clouds are in pitch darkness, so need to be exposed acccordingly.

For my shots, I found that the moon needed a normal "daylight" type of exposure (1/500, f10). The clouds, though, will need a typical nighttime exposure - f0.001, 1 s. Smile [:)].  Getting the two right is the same sort of problem that you have with clouds and a landscape, you can't (usually) get both right. So, go for one, or the other, and then blend in photoshop.

Re: Shoot the Moon - TONIGHT !

I loved all of these shots, and am very envious. I saw the moon last night, and it really had me tempted, but the reality of going out at night with my camera where I live in South London is not so pretty, and to be honest, I'm not going to risk it!

The moon this morning at about 6.45am was great too - hanging low in the sky over the A3 as I drove past Kingston, and again I found myself wishing I had my camera with me.
