    Weekend Competition

Lets start a weekend Competition. Every weekend we get set a task to photography. We post them up in a thread over the Sunday then any images posted after 12am on Sunday do not count. You vote for your favourite by adding to the thread through the week, the winner is the one with the most votes by Thursday at 12am. Friday the new comp starts and the winner is announced.

Example of task. The best photograph of something that has legs. The legs must be in the shot but does not have to be the point of focus.

    or

The best reflection photograph, water can not be used.

Something that will make us think.

    Anybody wanna play?

oh, what do you win? you get to add this title to your signature "the best photographer in the world Sep 8th-10th 2006"

I want to be "The Best Photographer in the World 15th-17th Sep 2006" :)

    Re: Weekend Competition

    I like the idea...

but who/how do we decide the topic? I suggest the previous winner choses, but if he hasn't by friday 12:00 (mid-day UK time! - I'm in NL, so suffer with the rest) then we revert back to the first suggestion after 12:00 on a friday.

I can see that the mechanics behind tallying the votes will be time consuming and painful (trawling through the posts counting the votes by hand).

    Re: Weekend Competition

Don't worry, I will do the counting.

Yes, I was thinking the winner gets to choose.

    So here goes.

Voting stops at Wed 00:00 hours. That will give me plenty of time to count the votes and plenty of time to vote. (3 days!)

The Winner will be announced at the latest by 12pm on the Friday. He now has 9 hours at least to post the instructions.

The topic will be put on the site by 9pm on the Friday.

You have from Friday night/Saturday morning 00:00 until Sunday 23:59 to take your photo and post it up. When the votes are counted I will ask the winner to supply me with a small original version so I can check the time and date on the properties. ALL SHOTS MUST BE TAKEN ON THAT WEEKEND FROM MIDNIGHT FRIDAY - MIDNIGHT SUNDAY. This makes it fair as the winner may have a good pic he took 2 years ago, making his life easy for the following weekend.

I will then officially post the Winners name. He must then add his Winning title "The Best Photographer in the World 8th-10th Sep 2006" (Weekend date you win) Start a new thread ie:

SEPTEMBER 15th-17th 2006 and post his instructions.

Even though we may get all this done by Thurday 7pm, you can only start the comp in the given time. That makes it more interesting.

    Does that sound ok?

P.S. as there is no winner, and you post back first, you get to give the first set of instructions. Anything you want.

    Re: Weekend Competition

    nice idea :)

.....but how do you vote? voting in that thread will get very messy.

Will you start another thread for voting?

    Re: Weekend Competition

Same thread. It will only take me about 15 mins to count.

No chatting in the thread. You post your pic and wait. Then when Monday comes, people go on to the thread, view all the pics and simply replies with a name. I can then write all the names on a tally and it is done.

If that doesn't work, we can always get a new thread.

    Re: Weekend Competition

Ok, I'll put on my thinking cap. Given the general level of quality of photos coming out of this community, I'm certain it will be the last chance for me to chose a subject.

I'll try to concieve something that is easily accessible to the vast majority of people. For example NOT: best photo of the london eye/Ben Nevis, etc, but rather something like: best photo of a wheel, best shot of a hill (although I'd struggle, being in Holland to find a hill to shoot).

I have until 21:00 UK time, right?

    Re: Weekend Competition

I like this idea but am glad that someone else is taking care of the admin. Can I suggest a subject? Very simply "Ball". As it's the first weekend of doing this, and there'll be lots of sporting activities taking place nearby or even in our own back gardens. How about it?

you could always pick something like .. emotion.. love.. fear.. challenge.. thought,

    rather than a solid object?

    Re: Weekend Competition

That is right. It has to be something easy to take as your subject. a fork, a barn door, you can choose B&W only or landscape with a trees etc.... Try not to make it specific, i.e: Macro work, not everybody has a macro lens, but you could say floral and then submit a macro shot etc...

9pm UK tonight so everybody can see it.

    Re: Weekend Competition

Snappy, ask nicely and Hevans may include it.

Daisiemaetulip, anything, anything at all, if you was to pick emotion then the voting would decide if emotion was indeed in the photo

Hevans, when you know what the instructions are, please create a new thread and post it.

    The thread should be called.

    Re: Weekend Competition

Blimey, the pressure is really coming up now! I'm almost afraid I openned my big fat electronic mouth.

I'm trying to conceive an idea that is sufficiently vague to let people diverge/provide their own interpretation. For example, "ball" is a good idea, but should not be limited to sporting events (I'm not a great fan of those either...despite being male). So, for this topic I'd have considered it Ok for Daisiemaetulip to go for a different type of ball, e.g. the moon, sun, anything roundish (my general shape Smile [:)]).

BTW. I liked the idea of it also being intangible, i.e. emotive. My guess, though, is that a photo of a tangible object that meets the required subject but is packed with emotion will probably be on to a winner (what gets more votes, a mother-baby moment, or a shot of a jelly baby)?

Don't worry y'all, I'll try to pick something we all have reasonable access to, but I doubt I'll be able to make all of the people happy (I'd settle for a few).

    Re: Weekend Competition

    Hevans,

don't worry about pleasing people, they can please thereselves when they win and get to instruct.

oh, forgot to add. one photo only can be submitted from each person and one vote only, whether you have submitted a photo or not. People can come in and vote but only once. You can even vote for yourself if you truely believe yours is the best, but I would not like to win knowing my vote won it! :)

Anyway, hope you all have fun. I know I will.
