By Digi Cam, I guess you mean compact camera or bridge camera. Also what do you mean by not crazy money - an idea on budget would help.

Essentially you'll need some for of manual control, be that Aperture / Shutter Priority or full manual control.

I'd say horse head shot, in focus at 60 - 90 feet you'd need a 300mm lens, shooting at a minimum of 400th sec. You'll need to illiminate camera shake too.

If you're trying it on a compact, shutter lag and AF will be you're biggest problems., in my view.

well im a equine photographer for my area's local newpapers and also take photos for a mag were i go it horse of the year show and olympia. heres a shot i took of a horses head if it helps

ponies head this was taken with my nikon D70 and a 70-300mmg nikkor lens. you can buy nikon D70's on ebay from 100 to 400. 400 being with all the starter lensies which the 70-300mmg lens is.

i find the Nikon D70 to be very good as a equine camra and also its very user and beginner friendly.

    hope this helps

I cut my teeth on a D70 - still have one now and use it as a second camera, very capable and would do the job.

One trouble you'll find though, AF a bit slow and ISO very bad at 800 and above, so at 300mm giving f5.6 minimum aperture you'll need a sunny day.

You'll also need to PAN with them as they come past if you're shooting action, statics and walking you'll be fine.

Get a monopod too - a decent one.

    hi peter

yes i do agree slightly on yr opinon but I used my in manual as i forund that i got a sharper n crisper picture rather than on manual. i currently use a D2H for my photography. this would b the camra to have but as peter said its realy does depend on the money you are willing to pay for a camra and lens.

Run that bit by me again, do you mean Manual Focus?

I'm on a d300 now and love it.
