    online photograhy courses

Hello All, I am a novice photographer and really need some help can anyone recommend an online course, I like the look of this one http://www.thephotographyinstitute.co.uk/index.cfm?content=home but its hard to tell if its just a fancy web site, would love to know if anyone has actually done this course, by the way I am a mac user, I don't know if this would make a difference but I seem to remember someone telling me the open university courses are pc. based

    Cheers

        Hi Jim,

I'm currently in the middle of an OCA course (home study) and the course work is not biased towards any particular type of computer. In fact you don't need one at all. So it's worth having a look at their courses.

BTW I'm a mac user too Big Smile [:D]

    Cheers,
    Aud

    Re: online photograhy courses

OCA is Open College of the Arts http://www.oca-uk.com/courses/photography

My personal opinion is that the best bit of a photography course is meeting other people (peers) and mingling with them, getting to know ideas, opinions and critiqueing each other's work.

What about checking the local Unis/Colleges for a part time course near where you live?

    Re: online photograhy courses

I've just completed the Open Uni course T189 which cost £165.00 and included a copy of elements 5.0 it's a 10 week course with weekly assignments you do one "mid-course assessment" then the ECA (end course assignment) I opted for this as a cheaper option than the OCA courses and thought it would be a good foundation. I got a lot out of it there is a very active community online but you do have to commit to 10 hours week for the 10 weeks...and I am waiting to see whether I passed get the results in Sept...I can recommend it though and preferred to spend £165.00 instead of £580.00 (couldn't afford that much)....let us know what you decide on though

    Re: online photograhy courses

Sorry just got a chance to reply to this one. I am doing this course and just up to assignment 5 due to pressure of work but likely to complete over the 12 motnh option I feel.

I`ve got a lot out of the course. You basically do the assignments, after downloading 50/60 pages of background reading and follow up reading which you can take as far as you want to go yourself. You do one at a time and cannot access the next until you have uploaded the one before. I have Matthew Evans as tutor who had done his assessments each time within 24 hours - often within 5/6 hours online. he has looked at other work I have done on DC mag gallery and elsewhere and offered good constructive criticism. A lot of the stuff I have done so far has been technical - lots of stuff on effect of ISO, aperture - generally better understanding of exposure and use of lenses. I feel I am getting a lot out of it but could get more if I put the time in which I am hoping to do over the next 3 months or so.

Downsides are that ther is no student link up that I can see in terms of comparing results / pics which is a shame and no student forum - really just two way with your tutor. Other side is that whilst you end up with a diploma I am nit too sure if it worth the paper it is written on but the guy who runs it , George Seper, is well known especially in food photography business ( M&S etc) so his backing may count for something. More importantly they help you put a portfolio together and go through everything from the basics to lighting studio etc and give you the spur to read / explore more within the structure of a course.

It`s personal choice but I like it and for what I want it does the job. The website gives an accurate breakdown of the content of each module if you check it out and you can pay monthly in interest free installments. I did look on approval at the Institute of Photography course ( yeah confusing with the names so similar ) but found that was less on the how you do it side and more - well you are already a good enough photographer this is how you market yourself, although it had some good sections on weddign photography and other areas. They were good in sending me the whole course, letting me inspect and then return for a full refund so all I lost was my return postage but I had to allow enough time to really look at it and get it back within timescale to do so.

It`s a big outlay so make sure it`s what you want - if you want to go down formal qualification routes perhaps C&G course and OU stuff is better but it`s down to what you want to do it for. Hope this helps - if you want any more detail or ask questions feel free to PM me.

    Re: online photograhy courses

Am also doing the course with the Photography Institute. I am normally engaged in some type of distance learning (mostly with the O.U.) but this time i thought "what about doing something i photography?"

It's a really interesting course and it certainly makes you think. Will it help me become a pro photographer? Probably not. As Tim Wallace has so nicely demonstrated, you don't need qualifications to be a pro - you just need the ability to see and create a good picture and the drive to make it work.

It's a good course that fits some where between the O.U. 10 week course and the full OCA degree. Is it worth the money? I think so.

Hi Jimmi, I have completed and passed T189 (the OU course). I used CS3 and I've never got round to installing elements. It'll be no problem at all.

Thanks KLockhart for the info, did the instructions you were given from the OU course translate to the mac software? I'm not very experienced on Photoshop and they have told me they won't be able to answer any mac related questions.
You may be getting some pm's in October when the course starts!!!!

    Re: online photograhy courses

hey jimmi,i notice your question with regards to use of photoshop on mac.ou's instructions should in a way translate to mac versions with the exception of shortcuts etc,i currently use photoshop cs3 extended.now the next question i would ask would be,do ou require use of plug-ins and actions, cos these may differ between versions also.best of luck.

by the way, contact each course provider, tell them you are interested in a course and request them to send sample course work from previous years

    Re: online photograhy courses

Hello Paul, How do you find the course, considering I am a novice any instruction would be a good thing, but I don't want to get in over my head and waste my money,
The course outline talks about darkroom techniques, if you are a digital user I take it you just miss out these modules?

    Re: online photograhy courses

    Hi Jimmi,

There are a total of 11 modules of which darkroom work is 1. You have to do 8 (plus a personal project), so its not necessary to do the darkroom one if you don't want to.

The course starts at a really basic level - module 1 is about the different camera / film types and their pros and cons (e.g. 35mm versus medium format) - module 2 takes you into exposure - and so on.

There's an online forum so you can get a feel for what its all about at:
