Thanks JC &amp; Paul, I did darken the background by painting over it, but it was pretty dark to begin with.
He was sitting in a beam of evening light coming in from the window and I exposed for his face, so there was a lot of natural contrast there. A sofa in the background also had some light on it but was easy to remove...
