OK — it's a sunrise!

It has to be said that most people travel to Zanzibar to visit their 'beautiful' 'pseudo paradise resorts', (Indian Ocean) Amazingly, the trip to Stone Town is usually done as a day tour. It's no secret where I spent my time — this is one from my day at the beach. Is it just me?!!

I would have spent more time in the fish market but it was a physical impossibility without an oxygen mask. Buckets of rancid fish guts were everywhere, the flies were having a feast, the rats were sleeping theirs off! This is one from my 50metre dash. I swear that smell stayed with me for hours. Any excuse for an ice cold lager! My apologies if you have just eaten!

Zanzibar is 95% Muslim. We arrived during Eid celebrations. Everyone was dressed to party, and party they did, day and night!

It's only when you have your camera and constantly have to crank up the ISO, do you realise how dark the alleys of Stone Town really are. ISO 400 in this place is nothing!

The streets are very narrow in the old part of Stone Town, so there is only one way to go!. Climb up as far as you can go and you can always spot someone trying to build that little bit higher! the little turquoise turret in the background is the rooftop restuarant to the 'hotel' where we stayed.

The majority of mansions, now in various states of disrepair are owned by the government. The rents are prohibitively high so in most cases a single dwelling is shared by several families. There is still only one kitchen and one toilet. Many without running water. Very young girls are designated water carriers and are dispatched to various public stand pipes.

The capital of Zanzibar is Stone Town. Here in the original historic quarter, the houses are tall and the streets very narrow. This provides shade from the sun, a pleasant breeze and escape from the humidity. You have to be slightly more ingenious to avoid the men on their bicycles and scooters.
