Fragile

Mantis Nymph just moulted, when they moult they are so fragile and look like glass, to the naked eye you can nearly see straight through them. So with this pic I have tried my best to capture that exact look, im not sure I have as I honestly find it very hard to get correct. Shooting data for this is Nikon d200 + Sigma 150mm Macro F11 iso 100 1/250th and a studio strobe in a softbox at 1/8th power, manual focus / metering and fired with cable release and mirror up. Phyllium Siccifolium Nymph A shot of a leaf insect, it is about 15mm long with a head diameter of about 1.5mm. Picture taken with it on a fresh budding hawthorn leaf under natural window light at f11 iso 200 1.5secs @ 210mm. Flash might be better but hard enough getting an exposure on these little critters without having to deal with softening flash, even breathing near them sets them of disco dancing. Hope some people find this a little interesting and different. Thanks for looking.

Shot using an old 28mm prime lens reverse mounted to camera. This is the quality you can get using a £20 lens with some good light and a lot of work! My Sigma 150mm Macro goes back in it's bag for these extreme closeups.

Chinese Mantis Nymph With Fruit Fly Shot with D200 + Reverse Mounted Vivitar 28mm Lens + 68m Tubes. This is full frame no crop or enlargement. Think focus distance here is around 6mm no idea what magnification is. For scale the fruit fly is about 2mm.

Chinese Mantis shot using a softbox for background and softbox for main. Mantis is sitting on a dandy lion flower head, shot side on to get the look. Only editing was adding a white vignette around the edge.
