POTD ? I think you have done well to capture yourself mid air....but, composition is poor, horizon is on the tilt, sensor or lens marks in the sky...etc. so why has this made the top spot...it is after all supposed to be a display of the best images isn't it?

I'm sorry, not my cup of tea. Along with pictures of half naked pregnant women, various coloured roses, individuals with inane slogans written on various  body parts, and cats, mid air shots is one of the most popular of themes over on Flickr; dozens a day are posted. Still a great thing to have managed to do all on your ownsome. Hats off to that. And congratulations on making POTD. Howard

Keep trying and I'm sure you'll capture something dynamic, but watch out for shortcomings as mentioned above.

I didn't comment on the last POTD, but I'm sorry, this doesn't deserve to be there.  If it had been done well, with a straight horizon, better composition and striking colours then perhaps I would have liked it.  But really, as has been said, POTD should be for the best of teh best images and they certainly have slipped recently.

Common guys, at least choose a picture that has ticked all of the basics and leave images like this for filkr or the forum for critiscm.

Funnily enough, this is the first POTD that neither Ant nor JD have commented on.

This one is certainly rubbing the "purists" the wrong way - for that reason it is having an impact - but in truth whether an image is a mundane top quality one or a unique poor quality one - puts it in the same catagory as far as I am concerned and that is the "no comment" file - but on closer inspection this one - although seemingly in the second "poor quality" bracket - has the uniquness that saves it somewhat - I like it - but there again I know nothing about "good crisp clean cut " photography  - do I - makes a change for me not commenting on a "tilted horizon" - will leave that for the other experts - congratulations to the photographer for the capture and bravery for posting this contentious image - cheers Gil.

I don't often leave comments but I feel I must... Congrats on getting a shot of yourself in mid air well done 'Shivinski' .
But who picked this as POTD??? What are you thinking?  Is this really the best photo of the day??? DCM I am shocked...

everyone to their own opinion, but one comment that bugged me especially is the 'at least choose a picture that has ticked all of the basics', please, structure a list of the 'basics' so we can all look at the same pictures everyday day in day out with no inspiration. Yes there are improvements to be made to the picture but arent there always?

Apologies if i'm wrong but to me it looks like a poorly photoshopped cut and paste that is wrong in so many ways that the gallery being created on april 1 and the pic posted the same day would suggest april fool -jmho

Apologies for not commenting sooner - have been in meetings all day, and Ant's in New York. As for some of the comments left on this image, I chose the photo because it was the most colourful, dynamic and interesting shot I saw uploaded today. It might not 'tick the basics', whatever they might be, but it shows a lot more creative flair than much that is uploaded here. The comments system on this site is for constructive criticism. "Not my cup of tea" is not constructive. "It is a fix" is not constructive. "DCM you can do better than this" is not constructive. "DCM I am shocked" is not constructive. "Is it still April fools day?" is not constructive. Complaining that the user only has one image in his or her gallery is not constructive (do 10 average photos = 1 great photo?) In future, if you have an issue with my selection, send me an email - otherwise, your comment will be removed.

Shivinski, sorry but you have been caught out in a case of the wrong place at the wrong time my friend. But to be honest there were IMHO better pictures posted on the same day. No hard feelings I hope. Rgds Alan.

My appologies to Shivinski, I am sorry that you have been caught up in something that was not your doing and take back my comments regarding the choice of POTD, as they should not have been directed at you.

I hope my comment too did not offend the photographer...it certainly wasn't intended too,&  hope my critique was at least constructive as intended, my gripe is with it as choice of POTD, I like seeing different...unusual...creative images after 40 odd years of photography my hunger to learn more is as strong as ever, but I fail to see how this choice of image will inspire, it is a very frequent type of image there are thousands like this on the net, so it is by no means unique & this particular one is just not very well taken & should therefore not take it's position as POTD, this should be reserved for inspirational photography, to take the website to the next level wasn't that your brief JD?
To Shivinski sorry you have been dragged into this debate, but keep on trying new things & developing your photographic skills, kind regards,
Don

I seriously don't know what all the hoo ha is all about! True the horizon is squint and there's a mark in the sky, WHO CARES! I think its a great image regardless of those points and who says you have to abide by the rules to make a good image? If you look at it for what it is then maybe you'll appreciate it more.  Maybe we wouldn't have had the cubist movement if artist such as Picasso listened to the criticisim of everyone else. (Ok an over the top example but you get what I mean.)

Funny, how many a people think this is an April Fools...thing is, I didn't even realise it was the 1st of April when I uploaded it! I took the picture on the 30th odd.

Also, everyone's complaining about the composition, and not having a straight horizon...To be honest with you, I didn't actually take this picture to be artistic. This was just one of the ones I took to evaluate myself on how high I was getting with my jump, but after seeing it, and spending a few odd minutes in photoshop, it turned out to be the best one I took that day.

Anyway, I'll hopefully be updating my gallery again soon. This time with more 'purist' pictures.

=)

I think you achieved  a clever shot here, and I dont think any critism is aimed at you personally. I for one will be glad that you will be adding to your gallery and hope to see your future work. By the way congratulations on making the front page, hopefully your next one wont cause so much controversy...Steve

I just recently registered here and "oh boy" reading the beginning of this thread does not give beginners like myself any confidence to take part in things without being overly criticised.  It makes me think that this is for Pro’s only and people like me should not take part.  In some peoples opinions there may be some things wrong but at the same time the good things need also to be commented on so good job to those who pointed these out.  I work in education and if your children were given this sort of feedback, I think you would be making an appointment to see the principle.

Maybe the POTD should be categorised into groups depending on experience.

Shivinski said:

I agree with Zing's idea actually...the POTD should at least be categorised in some way, to avoid this kind of confilct....I for one don't mind critisism, and infact have used all this to my advantage, and learnt from it...but im sure if I was a person of a more sensitive nature, then I might have been discouraged from submitting anymore images here...as it turns out...I carried on....and have made the front page a 2nd time....so I say even if you are new here (Zing), then dont be discouraged to submit your photos....even if a few of them get bad critisism, becasue your always learning and improving...and sometime or another, you'll produce a picture that everyone will love!

It certainly isn't perfect,, the horizon may be a bit dodgy, there's some sensor dust that needs cleaning up and it's not as sharp as it could be, But it's interesting and it has created an emotional response which in my eyes is what photography is about. Keep it up Shiv. Kind regards - Lee
