I was climbing Turtlehead Peak at Red Rock Canyon in Nevada and ran out of water. Given the heat, I didn't want to risk it and headed back. I took this one on the way down. The dandelions seemed like the only color in the entire valley that day.

Created in the mid-1980s by some Beligian artists who came to the Nevada desert to create outdoor art, this rendering of Da Vinci's The Last Supper visualizes the robes only. This piece is eerily set in Rhyolite, a Nevada ghost town that had 15,000 residents about 100 years ago.

100 years ago, Tom Kelly could not find any bricks to build his house in Rhyolite, Nevada. To build his house, he used leftover whiskey bottles from the local tavern. Although 10,000 people once lived in Rhyolite, it is now a ghost town, with parts of only a few buildings still intact. Tom's Bottle House still stands, however, having outlasted them all. This is an abstract of the back wall.

I Think I Can

This brave soul thought it would be fun to ride his bicycle from Deadhorse, Alaska to Fairbanks, a journey of about 500 miles. He had been traveling for two weeks when we caught up with him, as he was trudging up this steep sloppy hill in the middle of October. For the life of me, I do not know what he ate on this journey. There are basically two places to eat along the Dalton Highway, which is one of the loneliest roads I have ever seen. Not my idea of a vacation, but you have to admire that kind of spirit.
