Photography vs. Art

Photography vs. Art

Posted in response to Tim's thread about whether photography is art...

My own view seems to change each time I'm presented with a new scene. This image sums up the differences for me... When I first saw the staircase, it looked nice but didn't look like anything special. I did however, have a feeling that there could be more to it with a bit of work in Photoshop so I took the shot anyway.

The image on the left is straight out of the camera. It was a very contrasty location with a strongly defined mixture of sunlight and shade. No adjustments have been made to this image at all (apart from the resize).

The image on the right is a mixture of a DRi shot overlaid onto the original. It's also had a texture layer added and blended into the original to give a bit more punch.

Photography IS art, Si, IMHO, and always has been... from Ansel Adams dodging and burning right up to the present. The human element presents the image not just as the camera spits it out, but as we remember it, or wish it to be. We could all just put up shots right out of the box, much the same as we could all eat a sandwich with nothing on it... we, as artists, add the condiments we feel are right for our tastes.  RB

I am very much in agreement with Bob on this one Si, well said Bob.
They are both equally great captures (in their own right); however it depends what mood/feeling you want to portray.
Best Regards
Dave.

I am with the arty lot above me as well. It's hard to think of me as an artist. I used to be a plumber for pity sake.

Some would say that plumbing is art.......( well you would think so if you seen the shape on the plumbing in our house Graham lol).
I also agree with everyone else Si, Photography is an art. But saying that I also do the same as Donny. If I like something then I will photograph it ( although gone are the days when I just point and click the E500 just wont let me lol). Keep doing what you believe is right, edit things the way you would like to remember them.

What does it matter anyway..........art like beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Plumbing can be artistic and so can a photograph of it. It's all subjective.
