The Pumphouse - Firepool

The Pumphouse - Firepool

An alternative view of the old derelict pumphouse at Firepool Lock on the Taunton & Bridgwater Canal. I love this old victorian building, the last remaining example of a bygone age in this area, I like the way it stands there, proud and defiant while nature slowly reclaims its surroundings. The roof structure is actually a massive steel watertank that stored thousands of gallons of water drawn from the canal by two huge industrial pumps (located in the lower archway), this was then used to service the steam trains on the rail tracks behind the building. This whole area has been earmarked for re-development into retail, leisure and housing, but given the current economic climate it could be some years before the corporate cloners get around to ruining it, every cloud's got a silver lining I suppose! Beautiful image, Paul. Both the tones and details are amazing. Thanks for the background on this and it's very good to have record images of these landmark structures that will soon be gone; especially quality images like this one. Best regards, Rick

I love these old mills and factories......when I was a child I thought they were so ugly......but now I think they have great character......I know what you mean about the developers turning all these places into apartments etc.......but I would prefer that to them being pulled down......I think :)
Fantastic image......love it being viewed through the bridge......gorgeous work Paul !! Sally

Very nicely done Paul. Has to be seen full size to appreciate the quality and detail. Excellent ligthing. I don't think that enough is done to preserve Britain's industrial past - the National Trust and English Heritage should get serious about this sort of building before it's too late. Howard

That building would make a great museum/art gallery/craft centre if it was incorporated into the development, but knowing how the minds of most developer's work, something like that won't happen unless others want it and are prepared to stir for it's retention and restoration. Nicely portrayed Paul.

Many thanks for visiting and for all the great comments, much appreciated. Wayne: Unfortunately the cretins that run our district council have no appreciation of arts and culture, the building however is at least protected to some degree as it's been listed. Steve: The image is not HDR as such, I used two exposures and manually blended them in CS3 using layer masks, it takes a lot longer than using photomatix but I much prefer the more natural looking end result. Thanks again - Paul

Ah  Paul, I see you have been hanging out under bridges again! A good thing with images such as this! Beautiful lighting and details abound! Keeping fingers crossed that the developers admire and respect the past as it is the bridge to the future!

This building is Very impressive what a shame that soon history will be taken!! Sadly the same thing happens in Cyprus also & I always feel so angry when a part of history is taken away! Elly.
