Thanks to Dave Bracher for identifying this as a Bofors 40mm Anti-Aircraft Gun. Sited on the now dis-used Upottery (aka Smeatharpe) Airfield in Devon. Featured in Spielberg's mini-series 'Band of Brothers, it was from Upottery that Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, U.S. 101st Airborne Division boarded Douglas C-47 transporters and made their first combat jump into Normandy on 6 June 1944.

Let There Be Light

Best viewed large. Another shot from 'The Valley of the Rocks' in North Devon. In an uncharacteristic fit of exertion I climbed to the top of Castle Rock, only to see the sun disappear behind a solitary bank of cloud, typical. I sat here for the best part of an hour waiting for it to re-appear, but when it did, it was quite spectacular! This post marks exactly one year since I first picked up a camera and stumbled on this obsessive hobby, a big thank you for all the encouragement, fantastic support and inspiration, with your help I think I've found my first foothold.........onward and upward! The Pumphouse - Firepool

An alternative view of the old derelict pumphouse at Firepool Lock on the Taunton & Bridgwater Canal. I love this old victorian building, the last remaining example of a bygone age in this area, I like the way it stands there, proud and defiant while nature slowly reclaims its surroundings. The roof structure is actually a massive steel watertank that stored thousands of gallons of water drawn from the canal by two huge industrial pumps (located in the lower archway), this was then used to service the steam trains on the rail tracks behind the building. This whole area has been earmarked for re-development into retail, leisure and housing, but given the current economic climate it could be some years before the corporate cloners get around to ruining it, every cloud's got a silver lining I suppose! Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore - (Duomo - Florence). The colossal scale and supreme craftsmanship of this Cathedral is quite overwhelming, started in 1296 and completed 170 years later, it absolutely dominates its surroundings in the centre of Florence. Click image for a larger version.
